 2010/2011 season summary – Chelsea (Part 6)
Manchester United won the quarter final 3-1 on goal aggregate with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wayne-Rooney-c36736, Ji Sung Park and Javier Hernandez scoring for them in both the legs. On the other hand, Didier Drogba was the only goal scorer for Chelsea.
Later, Carlo Ancelotti admitted that choosing the newly signed http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Didier-Drogba-c11044 was a mistake and that really cost them the game against Manchester United.
Chelsea still managed to keep their good form in the English Premier League as they won their fixture against Birmingham City. With Chelsea winning 3-1 against Birmingham and Arsenal drawing 3-3 against Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea managed to climb second in the Premier League table on goal difference.
Manchester United sat on top of the table with Chelsea trailing behind them on the same level of points as Manchester City.
It took Torres a lot of time to score the first goal for Chelsea and it was scored on 24th April 2011 when the Blues faced West Ham United. Frank Lampard opened the scoring for Chelsea and Fernando Torres scored the second. The last goal was scored by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Florent-Malouda-c13838 and it was Fernando Torres who assisted him for that goal.
Chelsea played their last April fixture against Tottenham Hotspur. It was an important game as it could help them stay close to Manchester United in terms of points. Chelsea conceded the first goal but then came from behind to win the game 2-1.
Sandro gave Tottenham Hotspur the lead after scoring from 30 yards out. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Frank-Lampard-c14097 scored a controversial goal for the Blues as his shoot somehow squeezed between Gomez’s legs and found the back of the net. The replays later showed that Gomez managed to stop the ball before crossing the line but the goal was given and Chelsea equalized.
The match ended with another controversial goal as http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Salomon-Kalou-c32266 tapped in a close ranged shoot from Didier Drogba. Replays showed that Kalou was offside and the goal was still allowed. Chelsea won the game 2-1 and took the important three points.
With this win Chelsea managed to narrow their gap with Manchester United as http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 won their fixture against the Red Devils.
Chelsea had to face Manchester United in a must-win game and in case Chelsea won the match, it would mean that they were to be level on points with the Red Devils.
On 8th May 2011, Chelsea lost to Manchester United and the chances of Chelsea winning the Premier League became zero. Chelsea lost the game 2-1 with Javier Hernandez and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Nemanja-Vidic-c27550 scoring for Manchester United to give them a two goal lead in the first half.
Even though Frank Lampard scored one for Chelsea, United were too strong at the back and Chelsea lost their most important fixture against Manchester United.
With Manchester United drawing their next fixture against Blackburn http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rovers-c40385, it meant that they won their 19th League title and Chelsea failed to take any silverware throughout the season.
With these results, the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 coach Carlo Ancelotti was sacked on 22nd May 2011.
Chelsea took a bright start as the season kicked off but due to lack of depth in the squad their players couldn’t perform throughout the year. Ancelotti did have some fresh legs in January but they were simply not enough to help him win any silverware. Therefore, Chelsea’s 2010-2011 season ended without a single trophy.
