2010 ATP Rakuten Japan Open: Gael Monfils storms into the final
The fifth seed tennis player from France, Gael Monfils has reached the final of the 2010 ATP Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Tournament in Tokyo after getting the better of his Czech opponent, Radek Stepanek in a two-setter clash on Saturday. The final match score
was 6-3, 6-3. The clash concluded in a time period of seventy minutes in Tokyo.
Gaels, as a result of this victory has advanced into his eleventh ATP World Tour final of his career.
The Trelex resident, who prevented a single match point to get past Andy Roddick from the United States of America in the quarter final round in Tokyo blasted a total of five aces and converted three of five break point chances in his today’s match of the
Japan Open.
The 24-year-old Monfils previously contested at the United States Open in New York where he toppled Robert Kendrick in his opening round match in five sets. The final match score was 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, (5)6-7, 6-4. The Frenchman next defeated Igor Andreev in
the second set, followed by his victory over Janko Tipsarevic and Richard Gasquet before falling down at the hands of world number two Novak Djokovic in the quarter final round in Flushing Meadows. It was his first final eight showdown at a Grand Slam besides
the Roland Garros. He is also the first player from France to reach the quarters in New York, since Arnaud Clement back in 2000.
Monfils, as a result of his today’s victory has improved his match record to 34-15 on the year. Radek had defeated Monfils on his way into the final of the Brisbane International, where he was eventually ousted by Andy Roddick earlier in January. The world
number eight, dropped to a match record of 12-12 on the season.
