2010 ATP World Tour Finals: Djokovic in last four, season over for Roddick and Berdych
Serb Novak Djokovic clinched the final spot in the last four in London today after defeating American Andy Roddick with the loss of only five games. Djokovic qualifies for the 2nd position of Group B.
Djokovic is well on his way to bag another World Tour Final (WTF) title as he makes his way to the semis in the London event. Djokovic moves ahead with a win-loss mark of 2-1 event. Plagued by the contact lens problem, Djokovic
only suffered defeat at the hands of world number one Rafael Nadal. Djokovic, however, enjoyed straight set wins over both Tomas Berdych and Roddick.
This is the Serb’s fourth qualification for the season finale. His debut in 2007 was abysmal as he lost all his round-robin (RR) stage matches that year. The following year he made his way to the finals winning four of his five
matches. He defeated Nikolay Davydenko in the title match to bag his first WTF title. In 2009, he failed to make it to the semis despite his 2-1 win-loss mark in the RR stage.
Djokovic’s qualification for the semis follows that of Nadal earlier in the day. Nadal moved into the semis with a 3-0 mark after playing his last RR stage match against Czech Tomas Berdych. Nadal had dismissed Roddick and Djokovic
earlier in the week.
Joining Djokovic and Nadal in the last four from Group A are Swiss Roger Federer and Brit Andy Murray. Federer moved into the semis as a Group B winner with a 3-0 mark after defeating Robin Soderling on Thursday. Murray made it
to the semis the same day after doing away with David Ferrer.
With the RR stage over, the season ends for Berdych and Roddick.
Berdych ends the season with no title wins to his name. Nonetheless, the season was anything but mediocre for the Czech. Making the final appearance at Wimbledon and a debut semi final appearance at the Roland Garros, Berdych finishes
the season at a career high ranking of sixth position in the ATP rankings. Although the season is over for the Czech, Berdych is happy about the fact that his season ended with a match against the world number one.
The season is also over for Roddick as the RR stage ends in London. This was Roddick’s eighth straight qualification making him the only player besides Federer to have played in Houston, Shanghai and London. Roddick ends the season
with eighth position in the ATP rankings. The former world number one finds consolation in the fact that he ends his eighth straight year in the top 10. Roddick enjoys two titles this season. He won the season opener at Brisbane and then won a title at the
Miami Masters later in the season.
The season is however far from over for Djokovic. He plays Federer in his semi final match on Saturday and with the Davis Cup final a week, fans can expect much more of Djokovic on the courts.
