2010 ATP World Tour Finals: Serb Novak Djokovic thrashes Czech Republic's Tomas Berdych in opening match
Presently ranked no. 3 in the world, Novak Djokovic thrashed Tomas Berdych, beating him 6-3 and 6-3 in his opening match of the 2010 ATP World Tour Finals.
Djokovic stated, “There is no easy match, easy opponent, whatever. To start off with a break for me was very important. I was trying to focus on my game and do the things that I planned to do tactically with my coach. I think I
did well.”
Nole fared extremely well considering the fact that he was taken to deuce in two sets and did not face a single break point. Additionally, Berdych was given a tough time sprinting all over the court as Djoko used all sorts of forehand
and backhand shots. Apart from having to struggle throughout the match, Tomas landed 48 percent of his first serves and had three double faults.
“That is the worst case in every match, if you start pretty bad with a service game and you just give the break up to your opponent and if you play Novak, it’s even tougher,” said Berdych.
Witnessing Djokovic's opening match was football legend, Argentina's Diego Maradona. Right after clinching victory, Nole applauded Maradona prior to stating, "Thanks for coming. It's a great honour having you around. (To spectators)
When he came in during the middle of the first set, I wondered whether I should play with my legs or my hands!"  The joke was in reference to the midfielder's first goal in the 1986 World Cup quarterfinal.
Furthermore, Novak will be opposed by Swiss Roger Federer in the following round. Federer annihilated Spain's David Ferrer, defeating him 6-1 in the first set and 6-4 in the second set to mark a straight set win apart from taking
his career record against his competitor 11-0.
In the Men's doubles, Mahesh Bhupathi of India and Max Mirnyi of Belarus defeated Lukasz Kubot of Poland and Oliver Marach of Austria 7-6 and 6-4. Additionally, Daniel Nestor of Canada and Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia were to face
Wesley Moodie of South Africa and d**k Norman of Belgium.
