23. World number 56 Michael Berrer surpassed sixth ranked Nikolay Davydenko – Second Round Dubai
Nikolay Davydenko of Russia was facing an injury when he came to Dubai as seeded number four to win the title. He injured his wrist while competing at Marseilles in the semifinal round however, he still decided to take part in
the Dubai event.
Michael Berrer on the other hand, came out strongly, blasting a total of four aces in the first game. Surprisingly, the German was having a perfect beginning to his year, posting ten victories so far in 2010.
Michael broke Nikolay to go up 3-1 in the first set. Although the Russian did well to hold off his opponent, however, he still did not manage to break back.
When Michael took the opening set at 6-3, Nikolay pulled out of the match citing some undisclosed pain.
The unseeded Michael relished his win as he made his way into the third round. Davydenko, on the other hand, remained injured for most of the season and thus couldn’t perform up to the mark on the tour.
22. World number 22 Juan Monaco toppled fourth ranked Andy Murray – Second Round Valencia
The top seed and defending champion Andy Murray was stunned by his Argentinean foe Juan Monaco in the round two at Valencia. The competition serves as an important platform for the players to earn a spot at the season finale Barclays
ATP World Tour Finals in London.
The 23-year-old Scott who also won the tournament back in 2009, was expected to repeat his champion’s performance however Juan Monaco did not let that happen.
The professional tennis ace from Argentina started off the match really well by taking a lead of 3-1after breaking his opponent in the second game. Juan soon saw his lead climb to 5-2 and in the end took the opening set at 6-2.
Murray, the top ranked Brit, bounced back in the second set after missing his first service game. The right hander battled back to win the second set 6-3 with the help of his defense and solid serve.
The decisive set however belonged to Juan Monaco who further improved his game and thus sealed the win in the end. The final match score was 6-2, 6-3 and 6-2.
As a result, Andy, the defending winner was out of the competition in the second round whereas Juan Monaco reached the third round.
21. World number 60 Oliver Rochus surpassed seventh ranked Robin Soderling – Seventh Round Nice
This was one of the most shocking upsets on the ATP tour in 2010. Nice tournament serves as a warm up event to the French Open event in Roland Garros.
The professional tennis ace from Belgium Oliver Rochus, despite facing the top ranked Swede, did not tumble and tackled the pressure situation extremely well without any question.
Soderling, who finished the season ranked number five in the South African Airways ATP list, served a total of fifteen aces in the clash. However it was not enough to discourage his opponent who bounced back after breaking Soderling
on three occasions to seal win in the end. The final match score was 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
In order to confirm his spot in the quarters, the Belgian tennis ace, Oliver Rochus made use of well timed drop shots and effective slices to carve up his opponent’s game.
