2010 Ashes: Peter Siddle’s hat-trick devastates England
What a day to kick off the Ashes 2010! The Aussies were off to a flying start on the first day of their Test match against England, thanks to birthday boy Peter Siddle. At the outset of the match, the 26-year-old was under fire
from pundits for supposedly being the loophole in the bowling line-up. Siddle, however, had plans of his own as he went on to prove himself in front of an audience of 35,389.
The English side won the toss and elected to bat first, but came off to the worst start as captain Andrew Strauss got out for a duck, thanks to Ben Hilfenhaus. Later on, the innings was steadied by Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott.
Trott escaped an early shakeup when http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 decided to utilize its bowling power play in the fourth over and an appeal was turned down by ace umpire Aleem Dar. Trott looked to be very shaky during the innings though, before he was shown the way to the pavilion
by Shane http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Watson-c96326 when his individual score was 29. Kevin Pietersen showed a glimpse of his form and played in his signature style, scoring 43 runs but eventually falling to Siddle – who was just warming up for the day. Later on, Paul Collingwood failed to put
on a show and was caught by Marcus North on a Siddle delivery. Ian Bell came to the crease and put up a good stand of 72 runs, adding some respect to the English total before Siddle magic swept the Brisbane stadium.
When the score board showed 197 for 4, Siddle decided to start the party that was bound to continue till the late hours in Aussie pubs. He dismissed Cook, Matt Prior and Stuart Broad on successive deliveries and got a hat-trick
on his big day. Broad decided to add some suspense to the occasion by going into a batting power play which was turned down. The English side was reduced from a strong position to a bad one.
Siddle was still not finished and went on to remove the English spinner Graeme Swann, who scored 10. Ian Bell, the top performer this session, probably played one of his finest innings at the other end scoring a well fought 76.
His innings made sure that the English side didn’t collapse like a pack of cards after the Siddle rampage. He fell to debutant Xavier Doherty. The young spinner was over the moon when he got his first scalp. Later on he finished with stats of 2 for 41 in
13.5 over claiming the wicket of James Franklin to end the visitors’ innings. Siddle finished with a career best of 6 for 54. The English side ended up scoring a low score of 260 – a disappointing performance for them.
The Australians took up the bat and looked solid. They ended the day on 27 for 0 during the 7 overs of play with Watson on 9 and Simon Katich on 15.
The hosts are in a comfortable position now and looking forward to set a considerable lead.
