2010 Asian Games: India's Sania Mirza canters through to semi-finals
Eliminating Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Asian Games, India's Sania Mirza made a place for herself in the semifinals of the tournament. Mirza thrashed the no. 2 seed 6-2 in the first set and 6-3 in the set to follow to advance
at the championship.
Earlier, Tanasugarn defeated Korea's So Ra Lee 6-0 and 6-1 to face Sania in the quarterfinals of her draw. Furthermore, Mirza will be opposed by Uzbekistan's Akgul Amanmuradova in the semifinals.
Amanmuradova made it through upon deleting Japan's Ayumi Morita in the quarterfinals. Seeded no. 3 at the tournament, Akgul got off to a good start taking the first set 6-2. However in a reverse of fortune, the professional lost the second set 2-6 to her competitor.
The third set nevertheless went in favor of the Uzbek as she took it 6-2 to proceed to the next round.
Prior to battling it out against Amanmuradova, Morita defeated Vietnam's Phuong Dai Trang Huynh. The Vietnamese professional lost 1-6 in the first set and 2-6 in the second set to be sent home.
Meanwhile, Akgul got through with Indonesia's Lavinia Tananta defeating her 6-2 and 6-2 to mark a straight set win. Similarly, Mirza defeated China's Shuai Zhang taking the first set 6-2 and the second set 6-2 to make it through to the next round.
Amongst those to have qualified for the semifinals was also Japan's Kimiko Date Krumm. In an evenly contested quarterfinal match, the professional beat Korea's Jin Lee taking the first set 7-6 followed by the second set 7-5.
Lee made it through right after defeating Indonesia's Ayu Kade Dwi Fani Damayanti. The Indonesian was beaten 6-4 and 6-4. Date Krumm however, will be faced by China's Shuai Peng.
Peng got rid of Taipei's Kai Chen Chang in the quarterfinals beating the no. 7 seed 6-2 in the first set and 7-6 in the following set to make a place for herself in the semifinals of the 2010 Asian Games. Earlier, Chang defeated Uzbekistan's Sabina Sharipova.
Sharipova initiated the match with a 7-5 win. That however seemed to have been all she had to offer as she lost the second set 4-6 and the deciding set 1-6 to be knocked out of the tournament.
