2010 BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open Women’s singles competition; Thursday’s Review
The professional tennis player from Serbia, Ana Ivanovic posted yet another impressive victory at the 2010 BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open Women’s singles competition on Thursday, however, the championship took a hit when the former winner and this year’s
top seed Elena Dementieva withdrew from her second round clash versus Polona Hercog as a result of her foot injury.
The right handed Elena from Russia, while commenting on her injury after the match said, "I suffered the injury during the first round. I was able to finish the clash, however the next day I felt worse. I have tried so many different things, but it just
does not get any better. I am really disappointed, and it is sad, because I feel so welcome here. But I just cannot take the risk."
Elena will now travel all the way to Doha to take part in the elite eight women season ending WTA Tournament where she will be seeded number seven to win the title.
Meanwhile, Ana Ivanovic of Serbia won her fourth round match against Arantxa Parra Santonja of Spain to make her way into the quarter final round in Luxembourg on Thursday. The fourth seed previously won the tournament back in 2007.
Next up for the Serbian is the eighth seed Julia Goerges, who advanced into the final eight back on Wednesday. Ana also met Goerges in the quarter final round at Linz few days ago, on her way to the final victory that also ended her title drought of two
complete years on the tour.
The player Ana defeated in the final in Luxembourg back in 2007 was Daniela Hantuchova who in her match on Thursday wasn’t that successful as the 27-year-old Daniela was taken down by a player she had knocked down on two occasions earlier this year.
The fifth seed won the opening set versus Angelique Kerber of Germany. However, the left handed Kerber did well to level the scores in the following set and extended the match to a total of three sets on Thursday. Daniela prevented two match points before
losing at 3-6, 6-3, and 6-1.
The Slovakian after losing reflected, "She played really aggressively, and that put me under pressure to go for more on my shots. That is when I started to make more mistakes. In the third set she played really well and did not give me any opportunity."
Kerber as a result of this victory will next meet Hercog in the final eight in Luxembourg. The Italian tennis sensation Roberta Vinci, on the other hand, set up a match with Kirsten Flipkens who battled extremely hard to get past Barbora Zahlavova Strycova
in a three-setter clash on Thursday. The final match score was 7-6, (4) 4-6, 7-6(2).
In some of the other singles clashes, the former top ranked Brit Anne Keothavong, dispatched off this season’s Linz finalist Patty Schnyder in straight sets. The score line was 7-5, 6-2.
World number 143, Anne who resides in London has been affected by injury over the past eighteen months, most recently sidelined for three weeks due to her hip injury.
In spite of the fact that the last year’s singles winner Timea Bacsinszky was defeated on Wednesday, the rising tennis star from Switzerland kept her championship’s hope alive with another victory in the doubles event. She along with her partner Tathiana
Garbin got the better of Jasmin Woehr and Eleni Daniilidou to make their way into the semi-final round.
Later in the day, the top seed duo of Benesova and Zahlavova Strycova toppled Sania Mirza and Raquel Kops-Jones in a match tie-break to advance further in Luxembourg.
