2010 BNP Paribas Masters, men’s first round qualifiers
Frenchman Richard Gasquet defeated compatriot and wild card entrant Nicolas Mahut in the first round of the 2010 BNP Paribas Masters. Mahut lost the first set 7-6, shortly after which he took the second set 6-4.
It was however, Gasquet who came out victorious as he took the decider 7-6 to advance to the next round. Richard will be opposed by the no. 1 seed, Switzerland's Roger Federer in the second round of his draw.
Amongst those to have made it through was also the Czech Republic's Radek Stepanek. USA's Michael Russell faced defeat at the hands of Stepanek as he was beaten 6-2 and 6-0 to be sent home. Radek will furthermore, be faced by Spain's Nicolas Almagro, who received
a bye into the second round upon being seeded no. 14 at the tournament.
Columbia's Santiago Giraldo went head to head with Dutchman Thiemo De Bakker in the first round match played between the two. De Bakker was beaten 7-6, 4-6 and 5-7 to be eliminated from the tournament. Giraldo will battle it out against the no. 11 seed, namely
Austria's Jurgen Melzer in the second round.
Qualifier, Italy's Fabio Fognini got through with Germany's Michael Berrer defeating him 7-5, 3-6 and 6-4 in the first round of the tournament. Fognini will be opposed by Spain's David Ferrer in the second round of his draw.
Additionally, Argentina's David Nalbandian made it through the first round to be faced by Britain's Andy Murray in the second round. Nalbandian defeated Spaniard Marcel Granollers 6-3 and 6-1 in the first round of the championship prior to proceeding further.
In an all Ukrainian tussle, Sergiy Stakhovsky deleted compatriot Illya Marchenko 6-2 and 6-2, marking a straight set win for the professional. Stakhovsky will play the no. 13 seed, Croatia's Marin Cilic in the next round.
Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin faced defeat at the hands of Germany's Benjamin Becker as he lost 4-6 and 4-6 in the first round. Becker will be opposed by Frenchman Gael Monfils in the round to follow.
Wild card entrant, France's Arnaud Clement went nip and tuck with Spain's Feliciano Lopez defeating him 6-7, 7-6 and 6-3 to advance at the tournament. Clement will be facing Spaniard Fernando Verdasco in the second round of the 2010 BNP Paribas Masters.
