2010 BNP Paribas Masters - Highlights from Wednesday
The 29-year-old Swiss tennis maestro Roger Federer continued his excellent form in Paris as he dispatched off Richard Gasquet in a two-setter clash to make his way into the third round of the 2010 BNP Paribas Masters Men’s singles competition on Wednesday.
The final match score was 6-4, 6-4.
The sixteen-time Grand Slam champion, who made his debut on the ATP World Tour back in 2002 has triumphed in fourteen of the last fifteen clashes since the year’s final major, the United States Open in New York and looms as the player to surpass at the year
ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, which is set to start later this month in London.
However, the Swiss has a couple of unfinished business ahead of him this week before he embarks on a season end crown at The O2 in London. The BNP Paribas Masters has been his worst ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event in terms of playing performance as Federer
has never made his way beyond the quarter final round in his seven past appearances.
His glittering Masters 1000 career, which has reaped a total of seventeen trophies, includes crowns at six different 1000s competitions and runs to the title battles of two others. This week the Fed Express is looking to end his trophy drought in Paris and
level Rafael Nadal’s haul of eighteen career ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crowns.
The right hander broke his opponent early in both sets and served tremendously well to stay ahead right from the start of the match. He only missed four points on serve and did not face a single break point against Richard on Wednesday. Federer clubbed twenty
eight winners to only fourteen unforced errors while confirming his berth in the third round in Paris.
"It is always dangerous playing against Richard here. I do not think there was much between us except maybe a couple of games where I played really well,” declared Federer after the victory on Wednesday.
The professional tennis ace from Switzerland will next take on Radek Stepanek of Czech Republic, whom he overpowered in two sets last week at the Swiss Indoors Basel on his way to his fourth trophy of the season. The final score line was 6-3, 6-2.
World number five Robin Soderling of Sweden who is seeded number four to win the title in Paris, also cruised past his French opponent Gilles Simon in straight sets to reach the third round on Wednesday. The final score line was 6-4, 6-0.
Soderling, as a result of this victory will next take on Stanislas Wawrinka.
In the doubles action, the fourth seed duo of Oliver Marach and Lukasz Kubot have qualified for the elite eight man field in London on the second occasion in a row after they thrashed out Nicolas Almagro and David Marrero of Spain in straight sets on Wednesday.
The final match score was 6-0, 6-3. The battle was stretched to a time period of forty nine minutes.
The fourth seed pair won eighty six percent of service points and dropped only five points while clinching victory in the end. They blasted a total of six aces to get past their Spaniard opponent on Wednesday. Oliver-Lukasz currently owns a 32-20 win loss
mark of the season, highlighted by two ATP World Tour crowns at Abierto Mexicano Telcel and Movistar Open.
Meanwhile, the number one pair of Mike Bryan and Bob Bryan also fought hard to brush aside Ivan Ljubicic and Marin Cilic in two sets. The final score line was 7-6(3), 7-5. The match concluded in a time period of seventy three minutes.
