2010 BNP Paribas Masters: Preview of Wednesday’s morning session
The round two of 2010 BNP Paribas Masters Men’s singles competition wraps up on Wednesday with twenty two of the ATP World Tour players fighting it out for a place in the round of sixteen at the final ATP World Tour Masters 1000 competition of the year.
Of the twenty two contenders, eighteen have captured at least a single ATP World Tour crown in 2010.
First up on Court Central is the eighth seed Andy Roddick from United States of America versus Jarkko Nieminen, a qualifier from Finland. In their only past clash, Jarkko was up two sets to one in the opening round at French Open earlier this season before
losing in a five setter epic in the end.
Roddick, the Texas resident, is coming off his seventh final four or better run in 2010 at Basel a few days ago before losing there to the ultimate winner Roger Federer. He is looking to qualify for the year ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London
on the eighth occasion in a row. The American, who is currently ranked number eight on the South African Airways ATP list, owns a win loss mark of 46-14 on the year.
This is Roddick’s second competition since Oct 13th, 2010 when he withdrew from his third round match at the Shanghai Rolex Masters while playing against Garcia-Lopez as a result of injury. The professional tennis ace from United States of America has so
far captured a total of two titles this season in Brisbane and Miami. He also finished as runners up in San Jose and Indian Wells. His twenty nine trophies are the third-most among active contenders on the ATP World Tour, behind Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
The French tennis player Nieminen, on the other hand, qualified for the main draw in Paris after hammering Teymuraz Gabashvili and Marc Gicquel last week. He made his way into the round two after thrashing out his Belgian opponent Xavier Malisse in two sets.
The final score line was 6-4, 6-3.
Jarkko comes in with a win loss mark of 5-6 in Bercy with his career best result of a quarter final showing here back in 2006 where he was eventually toppled by Robredo. The right hander, who made his debut on the ATP World Tour back in 2002, couldn’t even
win his opening round match in his last appearance in Paris during 2008.
The 29 year old has been one of the most consistent contenders on the tour after the United States Open in New York, compiling a 15-5 mark since an opening round defeat in New York. He has made his way into the quarters or better on five occasions, including
a final performance in Bangkok last month.
The professional tennis ace from Finland is coming off his second round loss in Basel last week where he was bundled out of the tournament by the world number three Novak Djokovic of Serbia. He owns a match record of 30-26 on the year.
Next up is the second seed Novak Djokovic versus Juan Monaco, a top player from Argentina. The last year’s winner here is 3-0 lifetime versus Juan. However in his previous two tournaments, Juan has shown form that took him to the top twenty, reaching the
semis in Shanghai and last week getting the better of world number four Andy Murray in Valencia.
The 26 year old Argentinean is playing in the round two on the third occasion in a row. He opened his account here with a two setter win over Sam Querrey from United States of America on Tuesday. The final score line was 7-6, (7) 6-2.
Monaco is coming off his sixth quarter final run of the year in Valencia where he was defeated by Granollers in straight sets. He enjoys a match record of 30-19 on the season
World number three Serbian has a lifetime record of 8-4 in Paris and posted his best result of the year by winning a title in Dubai, beating Mikhail Youzhny in the final, followed by another trophy in Beijing.
World number three is also coming off his fourth ATP World Tour final of the year in Basel where he was defeated by the Swiss tennis maestro Roger Federer.
