2010 BNP Paribas Masters: Review of Wednesday’s Evening Session
Three matches were played in the evening session of the BNP Paribas Masters at the Palais Omnisports in Paris on Wednesday. These matches wrapped up the second round of the event, and as expected the seeds ruled the scoreboard.
Spaniard David Ferrer played the first of the three matches in court 1. The seventh seeded Spanish went head to head with the unseeded Italian Fabio Fognini. Fognini started strong and took the lead in the first set. Maintaining
the lead, he won the first set 6-3. Ferrer broke back in the second set and managed to scrape a second set win of 6-4 to take the match into the third and final set. The two players were neck to neck in the last set, with neither managing an edge over their
opponent. They managed to keep the score level until 6-6 taking the set into a tiebreaker. It was here that the last week Valencia champion, Ferrer demonstrated his superior tennis skills. Finally, managing a break at 4-4, Ferrer won three consecutive points
to take the score to 7-4 and win the tiebreaker. The final match score was 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(4). Ferrer goes on to face eleventh seed Jurgen Melzer in the third round.
Coming fresh from a win at Basel, Swiss Roger Federer started his Paris run on Wednesday with high hopes. Having never made it past the quarterfinals, the Swiss phenomenon is optimistic this time with the retirement of Spaniard
Rafael Nadal. Getting the top seeded position, Federer hopes for a better run at Paris than his previous times. Playing against the local Richard Gasquet, Federer had to account for the home court advantage in his opponent’s favour. He is, however, the Swiss
Maestro and almost unparalleled when it comes to skills on the court. Having served seven aces and losing only ten points on service, Federer was able to seal his victory with a twin set score of 6-4, 6-4. Federer will face Czech Radek Stepanek in the third
round.
The last spot in the round of sixteen was filled by the Swede professional, Robin Soderling. Seeded fourth in the event, Soderling had received a bye into the second round. Soderling ousted another local as he faced and defeated
Gilles Simon. The French put up some resistance in the first set trying to keep up with the Swede, but Soderling’s eight aces gave him the edge he needed. Soderling won the set by 6-4. Whatever backbone the French had shown in the first set was pretty much
crushed in the second set. Simon lost the set without managing to win a single game. The final match score was 6-4, 6-0.
With the second round matches wrapped up today, we have for us the round of sixteen qualifiers. With all but three seeds reaching the round of sixteen, one can hope to see nothing but exciting nail-biting tennis action from here
on, as the seeds are pitted against each other.
