2010 Bank Austria Tennis Trophy: Michael Berrer versus Haider Maurer – Match Preview
The German tennis player, Michael Berrer and Haider-Maurer will play in the second semi final of 2010 Bank Austria Tennis Trophy Men’s singles competition on Saturday. Both of them will face each other on the second occasion in their careers.
The 20 year old Berrer is playing in his second ATP World Tour semi-final in 2010. The professional tennis player from Germany reached his first career ATP World Tour title battle earlier this season in February at Zagreb where he was defeated by Marin Cilic
in straight sets.
The left hander is playing in Vienna on the third occasion in his career and stands at 4-2 lifetime. He comes in with a match record of 20-25 on the season. Berrer achieved his career highest ranking of world number 42 back in May. The last player from Germany
who advanced into the title battle in Vienna was Philipp Petzschner, who had overpowered Monfils back in 2008. Prior to that, Tommy Haas captured the crown nine years ago.
Berrer is the third highest ranked in the ATP list behind Kohlschreiber and Florian Mayer. He is currently ranked number 53 in the world. The German is attempting to register his name as the first contender from his country to capture an ATP World Tour trophy
in 2010. Three weeks back, Berrer had successfully qualified for the China Open in Beijing and surpassed the world number seven and Wimbledon finalist, Tomas Berdych in three sets before losing to Simon in the next round. He is coming off his opening round
defeat in Shanghai and Stockholm last week.
World number 157 Haider comes in with a match record of 4-3 on the season. The 23 year old, a lucky loser in the competition, is playing in his first career ATP World Tour final four on the tour. He along with Jurgen Melzer is the first Austrian to make
his way into the semi final round in Vienna in a single season since 1990.
Haider is attempting to register his name as the first lucky loser to advance into an ATP World Tour title battle in 2010. He is playing in Vienna on the third occasion in his career and stands at 3-2 lifetime. The professional tennis player from Austria
recorded the biggest victory of his career over the fourteen ranked Marin Cilic in two sets. The final match score was 7-6,(1) 6-4. Haider made his way into the semi final round after beating Andreas Seppi and Thomas Muster. By making his way into the final,
he will improve his ranking to number 116 on the tour.
This is his third ATP World Tour level competition of the season. He previously qualified in Gstaad back in July but couldn’t go beyond the second round. At the United States Open in New York, Haider was hammered down by the world number five, Robin Soderling
in five sets. The right hander also contested in the Davis Cup ties however was thrashed out by Sela of Isreal in the opening rubber.
While three of the top four seeds will play the singles semi final clashes in Vienna, all four seeded doubles pairs are in the final four. The first seed pair, Nestor-Zimonjic will meet the fourth seed duo of Knowle-Ram whereas last year's winner, Kubot-Marach
will take on Fyrstenberg-Matkowski.
Nestor-Zimonjic have already qualified for the year ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London whereas the other three pairs are still attempting to earn one of the four remaining positions.
