2010 Bank Austria Tennis Trophy: Monday’s Review
Monday 25th October saw four finals of the qualifying round along with three singles matches of the main draw in Vienna as the 2010 Bank Austria Tennis Trophy entered the third day of play. A doubles match was also scheduled
later in the day.
The first professional to qualify for the main draw was the Turkish Marsel Ilhan after his match with the Austrian number four, Andreas Haider-Maurer. Ilhan won the first set 6-3 and was on his way to winning the second set with
a 3-0 when Maurer retired from the game with a right leg injury. Subsequently, Ilhan got an automatic win and a spot in the main draw. Maurer had already gained acceptance into the main draw as the lucky loser. Maurer will now face countryman and wild card
entry, Thomas Muster in his first round match of the event.
Slovenian professional Grega Zemlja also secured a spot for himself in the main draw after having defeated Romanian Marius Copil. Zemlja won the first set 6-4, losing the second to Copil 4-6. However, he managed to reverse the
tide and won the third set 6-3 to move into the main draw. He will now face Ilhan in the first round of the event later in the week.
Another Slovenian to win a spot in the main draw was Andrej Martin as he defeated German professional, Dieter Kindlmann. Martin won the match 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Kindlmann’s countryman Matthias Bachinger however had luck on his side
as he won his match against Filip Prpic to gain acceptance into the main draw. Bachinger won his first set 6-2. The second set score was at 2-0 when Prpic retired from the match giving Bachinger an automatic acceptance into the main draw.
The first match of the main draw scheduled today was between the wild card entry Martin Fischer from Austria and the Italian Andreas Seppi. The Italian obtained an easy victory over the Austrian, thus kicking him out of the tournament.
The final match score was 6-3, 6-3. This was the pair’s first head to head encounter ever on the court in an ATP World Tour main draw.
Seventh seed Philipp Kohlschreiber from Germany met the Colombian professional Alejandro Falla; Kohlschreiber played superbly and had an easy straight set win over his opponent. The final match score was 6-0, 6-3.
The last singles match for the first day was that of Czech number three Jan Hajek and Pere Riba from Spain. The Czech got an easy win over the Spaniard with a 6-0, 6-2 to move into the second round.
The first doubles match of the tournament was played between the pair of German Michael Kohlmann and the Spanish Pere Riba, and the Croatian team of Marin Cilic and Lovro Zovko. The Croatians humiliated Kohlmann and Riba in an
unseeded battle to move into the second round of the tournament. The final match score was 6-1, 6-1.
Four top seeds into the tournament; defending champion Jurgen Melzer from Austria, Croatian Marin Cilic, Spanish Nicolas Almagro and Marcos Baghdatis from Cyprus received byes into the second round of the main draw. They will
now play their first event matches later in the week.
