2010 Bank Austria Tennis Trophy: Preview of two opening matches on Wednesday
The number one seed and last year’s winner, Jurgen Melzer along with second seed and 2009's runner up, Marin Cilic are among the eight players in action in today’s schedule of play at 2010 Bank Austria Tennis Trophy in Vienna. Jurgen is the top seed in an
ATP World Tour championship on the first occasion in his career.
In the opening match of the day, Bjorn Phau of Germany will take on Florian Mayer on the centre court. World number eighty nine Phau enters with a match record of 8-12 on the season. The thirty one year old is playing in Vienna for the first time since his
opening round defeat there back in 2005. The right hander was the last direct entry into the main draw.
The German posted his best result of the season at Bucharest last month where he reached the quarter final round before losing to the ultimate winner, Juan Ignacio Chela. Phau looks to end his season in the top hundred on the first occasion in his career
since 2006 when he was ranked number seventy eight on the tour.
World number forty Mayer is coming of his third career ATP World Tour title battle at 2010 If Stockholm Open last week where he was dismissed by the world number two, Roger Federer in straight sets. The twenty seven year old Mayer was also a finalist at
Sopot in 2005 as well as the following year. The right hander is contesting in Vienna on the fourth occasion and stands at a career mark of 2-3 here. He had made his way into the second round in 2004 and two years later also.
Mayer enters with a match record of 23-16 on the year and is currently ranked number forty in the world by ATP. He is also the second highest ranked German behind the world number thirty five, Philipp Kohlschreiber.
The professional tennis player from Germany is attempting to end in the top fifty on the first occasion since 2004 when he had ended the year at number thirty five. His best results in 2010 so far include a semi final run in Hamburg and quarter finals in
Stuttgart and Rotterdam.
In the second match of the day, Jurgen Melzer will attempt his second victory in as many clashes versus Lukasz Kubot from Poland. World number twelve Melzer is the top Austrian in the ATP rankings. He had won the title last year and enters with a career
mark of 16-9 in Vienna. The right hander is contesting here on the eleventh occasion in his career.
He enjoys a match record of 46-24 on the season. Jurgen is coming off his appearance at the 2010 Shanghai Rolex Masters in China where he recorded the biggest victory of his career against Rafael Nadal in the third round before falling down at the hands
of Juan Monaco of Argentine. He has reached the semi final rounds in Zagreb, Dubai and Roland Garros so far in 2010.
The twenty eight year old Kubot on the other hand, broke his seven match opening round losing streak on Tuesday after clinching a 6-4, 6-4 victory over his American tennis foe, James Blake. His previous win had came at the All England Club in London where
he defeated Kavcic. Kubot, who is playing in Vienna on the third occasion in his career, enters with a win loss mark of 15-24 on the year. He is currently ranked number sixty six in the world and had achieved his career high ranking of number forty back in
April after making his way into the quarter final at Casablanca.
