2010 Bank Austria Tennis Trophy: Thursday Doubles Review
Three quarterfinals and two first round matches were scheduled for Thursday in Vienna as the top seeds took to the courts. With the exception of one, all the doubles matches were played in the side court of Wiener Stadthalle.
The fourth seeded team of Austrian Julian Knowle and Israeli Andy Ram played the day’s first doubles match in the centre court as they took on the Croatian team of Marin Cilic and Lovro Zovko. One of the three quarterfinals in
the day, it was an important matchup for both teams. Knowle/Ram took the lead in the first set, winning it 6-3. The second set of the game went into tie break; however, the Austrian/Israeli duo maintained their good form and won the set 7-6(1).
The top seeded team of Daniel Nestor (Canada) and Nenad Zimonjic (Serbia) battled it out with German Philipp Marx and Mexican Santiago Gonzalez for a spot in the semifinal. A favourite to win the event title, the team of Nestor
and Zimonjic has won five titles this season including the French Open in July. The German Mexican duo caused to hurdle the favourite’s title run by winning the first set 6-4. However, Nestor and Zimonjic soon bounced back with their famous coordination and
won the next two sets on tie breaks. The final match score was 4-6, 7-5, 10-4. The pair secured a spot for themselves in the semifinals as they sealed their victory against Marx and Gonzalez.
The German team of Philipp Kohlschreiber and Christopher Kas played their first doubles match of the event today as they took on the team of Pablo Cuevas (Uruguay) and David Marrero (Spain). The Germans managed an easy straight
set win over the Uruguayan/ Spanish duo having defeated them by a twin set score of 6-2, 6-2. They move on to play their quarterfinal match later in the event.
The second first round match of the day was between the Colombian team of Alejandro Falla and Santiago Giraldo and the second seeded team of Polish Lukasz Kubot and Austrian Oliver Marach. Doing justice to their seeded position,
Kubot and Marach sailed their way into the quarterfinals. The Polish / Austrian pair won the first set 6-0 without losing any games to the Colombians. Though the Colombians tried for a comeback in the second set, they were unable to make much headway and ultimately
lost the set 6-4 to Kubot / Marach. Kubot and Marach will play Kas and Kohlschrieber in their quarterfinal match.
Playing the last doubles matchup of the day, third seeded Polish team Mariusz Fyrstenberg and compatriot Marcin Matkowski humiliated their opponents German Michael Berrer and Dutch Thiemo de Bakker with a straight set win of 6-4,
6-0. Winner of the Kubot / Marach vs. Kas / Kohlschreiber match will play the third seeded pair in a semifinal match later in the event.
With the exception of the second seeds, all the top seeds have managed to stay in the title run and will now go head to head in the semifinals.
