2010 Bank Austria Tennis Trophy: Thursday Singles Review
Thursday’s end saw a total of five singles matches being played on both the courts in Vienna. Since all the matches were second round matches, the scoreboard showed some important results as the last match of the day wrapped up.
The first pair to battle it out for a spot on the quarterfinals was the German Michael Berrer and Pablo Cuevas from Uruguay. Berrer got off to a good start in the event having upset sixth seed, Spanish Guillermo Garcia. Berrer’s
good luck hit a minor bump against Cuevas when the latter took the lead with a first set win of 7-5. However, Berrer committed no double faults in the second set and losing only five points on service, won the set 6-3. As the match entered the deciding set,
Berrer’s good fortune continued and he ultimately won the decider 6-3. Berrer was the first of the day and fourth in the event to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.
As the German/Uruguayan duo battled it out in the centre court, the Slovenian Grega Zemlja met eighth seed, Argentinean Juan Ignacio in the side court. Zemlja started strong into the match and won the first set 6-2. However, despite
serving six aces in the second set he soon lost to the seeded player. Igancio won the second set 7-6, taking the match into its third set. However, the Argentinean continued to show excellent performance at the court to win the last set 6-3. His consecutive
sets win sealed his victory and ensured a spot for him in the quarterfinals.
After Berrer’s win, third seed Spaniard Nicolas Almagro took to the court to battle it out with the Colombian Santiago Giraldo. A match that lasted two hours and seven minutes saw another win for the seeded players. Almagro secured
a close win of 7-6 in the first set. However, Giraldo served seven aces in the second set to take the match into the third and final set after a 7-6 win. Almagro turned over the tide in the third set and managed an easy win of 6-3. The Spaniard now moves on
to face Ignacio in the quarterfinal later in the tournament.
Local and lucky loser, Andreas Haider-Maurer met Italian Andreas Seppi in his second round match of the event. In a tiring matchup that lasted two hours and thirty minutes, both players managed a one set win to take the fourth
match of the day into the third set. Maurer started off strong when he managed a first set win of 6-3. However, Seppi bounced back in the second set as he won the tie break 7-6. As the two players played the final and deciding set, it soon became clear that
the two were evenly matched as the set score kept being tied. As the final set entered the tie breaker, Maurer managed an edge over the Italian to secure a win by 7-6(2). He advances into the quarterfinal where he will play second seed Marin Cilic.
In the last matchup of the day, seeded player Marcos Baghdatis faced German Bjorn Phau to contest for the last quarterfinal spot. In the first straight win of the day, Baghdatis dismissed Phau in only 73 minutes to sail into the
quarterfinals. Baghdatis will face Phau’s compatriot Michael Berrer in his quarterfinal match.
The winners join Jurgen Melzer, Philipp Kohlschreiber, and Marin Cilic to fill up the remaining quarterfinal spots.
