2010 Bank Austria Tennis Trophy: Tuesday’s Review
Tuesday saw a total of ten matches as the professionals battled it out in Vienna at the 2010 Bank Austria Tennis Trophy; eight singles and two doubles matches were played.
First matchup of the day was between German Michael Berrer and sixth seed Spanish Guillermo Garcia. Berrer had earlier been defeated in the year at the PTT Thailand Open by Garcia making their head to head score 1-0. Given a second
chance, Berrer played excellently against the seeded player and managed to level the score. Berrer won the first set 6-3, however he lost the second set 6-4. Determined to level the score, Berrer bounced back in the third set and with a 7-5 victory won the
match. The final match score was 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
The second matchup saw Wild card entry James Blake from U.S.A battling it out with Polish Lukasz Kubot; Kubot won the match with a twin set score of 6-4, 6-4. Kubot, now moves ahead in the draw to play 2009 champion Jurgen Melzer
in their second round match on Wednesday.
The oldest player of the tournament, Thomas Muster entered the tournament as a wild card entry with hopes to win a title for Austria. However, his hopes were crushed by compatriot and lucky loser, Andreas Haider-Maurer. Maurer
advanced in the tournament with a straight set win over Muster of 6-4, 7-6. Maurer will now face the Italian Andreas Seppi in their second round match later in the tournament.
The first doubles matchup of the day was between the Austrian team of Melzer brothers, Gerald and Jurgen and the team of Michael Berrer (German) and Thiemo de Bakker (Netherlands). The Melzer brothers were a wild card entry into
the tournament. Having lost the first set 4-6, they managed to bounce back and won the second set 6-3. However as luck would have it Berrer / de Bakker proved superior and ultimately won the third set 10-3 to eliminate the Melzer brothers from the tournament.
The second doubles match of the day was between the fourth seeded team of Julian Knowle and Andy Ram, and the Austrian pair of Maurer and Niki Moser. The latter were a wild card entry into the tournament. As reflected by the results,
the seeded team managed to dominate the court and obtained a straight set win over the Austrians. The match score was 7-6, 6-4. They will next face the Croatian team of Marin Cilic and Lovro Zovko.
Court B saw Pablo Cuevas from Uruguay and de Bakker battle it out for a spot in the second round. Even though Cuevas lost the second set 1-6 to de Bakker, he won the match with a final score of 7-6, 1-6, 6-4. Cuevas will face Berrer
in their second round match later in the tournament.
Turkish tennis player, Marsel Ilhan faced the Slovenian professional Grega Zemlja to stay in the running for the title. Both players had gained acceptance into the main draw from qualifying rounds. Zemlja lost the first set to
Ilhan 4-6, however he proved his mettle in the next two sets and won them 6-1, 7-5. Zemlja will next face Juan Ignacio from Agrentina in their second round match. Ignacio moved into the second round after defeating Zemlja’s countryman Andrej Martin later in
the day. Ignacio managed a straight set win of 6-3, 6-3 over Martin.
The last matchup of the day was played between Germans Tobias Kamke and Matthias Bachinger. Kamke advanced into the second round with a 6-4, 6-4 win over his countryman. Kamke will next face countryman Philipp Kohlschreiber in
their second round match later in the tournament.
