2010 Bank Austria Tennis Trophy: Wednesday’s Previews
The ATP event at Vienna enters its third day of play on Wednesday, 27th of October. The day will see a total of six matches being played; both singles and doubles. Top seeds in both categories have a match scheduled
for the day.
The day starts with the top seeded team of Canadian Daniel Nestor and Serbian Nenad Zimonjic going head to head with the Austrian team of Andreas Seppi and Simone Vagnozzi. The team of Nestor and Zimonjic has 21 career titles to
date including three Grand Slam titles. They have won five titles this season including the French Open in July. It seems the Austrians have some huge odds stacked against themselves.
Following the doubles match in the centre court are three singles matches. The first of which will be played between the Germans Bjorn Phau and Florian Mayer. Coming fresh from the final in Stockholm last Sunday, Mayer seems to
be in fine form and might prove to be more than his countryman can handle. Earlier, Florian played Swiss maestro, Roger Federer in the final at Stockholm. With the defeat fresh in his mind, he will be motivated to give it his all for another chance at an ATP
event title. Mayer and Phau have a head to head score of 1-0 in Mayer’s favour as they took to the court only once, before in 2006 in Halle when Mayer defeated Phau by 7-5, 1-6, 7-6(8). For a second time round, we can expect Phau to be practiced and prepared
for the match so that he can try to level the head to head score. The winner of this match will go on to face Marcos Baghdatis in their second round match. Fourth seed Baghdatis received a bye into the second round.
Defending champion and top seed Jurgen Melzer also takes to the court on Wednesday as he faces Polish Lukasz Kubot in their second round match. Melzer received a bye into the second round whereas Kubot defeated wild card entry
American James Blake to move ahead. The two players have gone head to head once before in 2006, Vienna. The score favours Melzer with 1-0. Now four years later in the same court, will Kubot be able to level the score and knock the defending champion out of
the running, or will the top seed manage another win over the Polish professional?
Last year’s finalist and second seed in the tournament, Marin Cilic from Croatia faces Czech Jan Hajek in their second round match later in the day. Jan Hajek faced and defeated Spanish Pere Riba in his first round match. It was
a straight set win with the final match score at 6-0, 6-2. Cilic being the second seed received a bye into the second round. The two players have never met in any qualifying or main draw ATP event.
Court B sees two doubles matches one after the other; the first match will be played between the Brazilian team of Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares, and the third seeded Austrian team of Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski. The
winner of this match will go on to face the team of Michael Berrer (Germany) and Thiemo de Bakker (Netherlands). Berrer and de Bakker moved into the second round after having defeated the Austrian team of Melzer brothers, Gerald and Jurgen.
The last doubles match of the day will be played between the team of Santiago Gonzalez (Mexico) and German Philipp Marx, and the team of Croat Karol Beck and Czech Lukas Dlouhy. The winner of this match will play the winner of
the Nestor/Zimonjic vs. Seppi/Vagnozzi.
