2010 Bank Austria Tennis Trophy: Wednesday’s Review
The ATP event at Vienna finished its third day of play on Wednesday, 27th of October. The day saw a total of seven matches; both singles and doubles with top seeds in both categories having a match scheduled for the
day.
The day started with the top seeded team of Canadian Daniel Nestor and Serbian Nenad Zimonjic going head to head with the Italian team of Andreas Seppi and Simone Vagnozzi. Season’s French Open winners Nestor and Zimonjic humiliated
the Italians with a straight set win of 6-0, 6-0. The team is off to a good start in the event and if they continue today’s performance they might just sail all the way into the finals.
Following the doubles match in the centre court were three singles matches. The first singles match of the day was between the Germans Bjorn Phau and Florian Mayer. Phau dominated the court and won the match 6-2, 6-4. The 2010
Kremlin Cup runner up Mayer came with the hopes of having another go at the title in this second consecutive tournament in Russia; however, his hopes were dashed by his compatriot who gave an excellent performance and earned a straight set win. Phau goes on
to face fourth seed Marcos Baghdatis later in the tournament.
Defending champion and top seed Jurgen Melzer opened his title defence on Wednesday as he faced Polish Lukasz Kubot in their second round match. Melzer had received a bye into the second round, whereas Kubot defeated wild card
entrant, American, James Blake to move ahead. The two players met on the court with a head to head score of 1-0 in Melzer’s favour. The local favourite obtained a straight set win of 7-6, 7-6 over the Polish for a second consecutive title run. Kubot did put
up a fight in the second set having served five aces, but Melzer still managed to serve seven aces making his total of thirteen aces in the match, giving him a lead of one over the Polish.
Last year’s finalist and second seed in the tournament, Marin Cilic from Croatia faced Czech Jan Hajek in his first match of the tournament. Being the second seed, he had received a bye into the second round. Hoping for another
shot at sailing into the final for a second year in the running, Cilic brought his A game to the court and defeated his opponent 7-6, 6-2.
Germans Tobias Kamke and Philipp Kohlschreiber also met on the court for the last singles match of the day. In a nip and tuck match that followed, Kohlschreiber won the first set 6-4, only to lose the second set 3-6. In the last
set however, Kohlschreiber picked up his performance; having served two aces in that set he managed an edge over Kamke to make the final set score 6-1.
Court B saw two doubles matches one after the other. The first match was played between the Brazilian team of Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares and third seeded Austrian team of Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski. The Brazilians
put up a good fight and did manage to win the second set 5-7, after having lost the first one 7-6(5); however, the Austrians had the home court advantage and ultimately prevailed in the match. They won the third set 10-5 and in effect the match to move into
the quarterfinals.
The last doubles match of the day was played between the team of Santiago Gonzalez (Mexico) and German Philipp Marx and the team of Croat Karol Beck and Czech Lukas Dlouhy. The Mexican German duo had an easy win of 6-4, 6-3 to
sail into the quarterfinals to face Nestor / Zimonjic.
