2010 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, Robin Soderling routs David Ferrer to post his first win
The 2009 season finale semi-finalist Robin Soderling from Switzerland recorded his first victory of the 2010 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London as he won a two setter hard fought battle against David Ferrer in the Group B match on Tuesday. The final
score line was 7-5, 7-5.
After breaking in the twelfth game to earn a one set lead, the fourth ranked Swede served for the clash at 5-3 in the decisive set.
However, he was broken on the first occasion in the contest as his Spanish opponent converted his only break point opportunity. The right handed Soderling broke down his foe’s defences again during the twelfth game, to clinch a win in the end. The battle
lasted for a time period of one hour and forty-one minutes.
"I served very well, particularly in the opening set. However it was tough. It was a close match, two really tough sets. I am lucky that I won. I still feel that I have a lot of things that I can improve. Hopefully I can do that in two days' time and play
a good match in my next clash”, reflected the Swede after his win on Tuesday.
Currently ranked number four in the South African Airways ATP list, Soderling, who was toppled in his first match in London at the hands of Andy Murray on Sunday has now 1-1 mark in Group B, whereas Ferrer, who was also ousted in straight sets by the Swiss
tennis maestro, Roger Federer earlier this week, dropped drown to a mark of 0-2.
The right hander Soderling, by virtue of this victory, will take on the four time winner Roger Federer in his final round robin match on Thursday. Ferrer, on the other hand, will play a must win battle with Andy Murray in the evening.
Soderling, the Tibro native, came into the prestigious event in red hot form, having recently captured his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 trophy on the indoor courts of the BNP Paribas Masters in Bercy.
The 26-year-old was thrown off his stride by a majestic display from the number one Brit, Andy Murray, in his opening match on Sunday. However, the Swede quickly recovered to turn in a solid display versus Ferrer, whom he had lost to few days back in the
final four round in Valencia.
The Swedish super star whose other highlights in 2010 include winning the crown in Rotterdam, beating Michael Youzhny and advancing into the final at the French Open for the second straight season, improved to a win loss mark of 57-21 in the year.
He is the first player from Sweden to finish in the top ten of the South African Airways ATP Rankings in consecutive years since Thomas Enqvist back in 1999 and 2000.
On the other hand, World number seven Ferrer, as a result of this loss has dropped down to a match record of 60-23 this season. The professional tennis ace from Spain is playing at the elite eight man field in London on the first occasion since making his
way into the title battle here back in 2007 where he was crushed by Roger Federer is straight sets.
He picked up two ATP World Tour 500 titles this year in Acapulco, defeating Ferrero and Valencia, beating Granollers and also finished as runner-up at three events, including the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 competition in Rome.
“I tried to do my best. I fought to won the second set. However, Soderling played better than me and he had more chances all the match. I am with confidence. I finish the season top ten. I do not have any problem physical, mentality. I know with Andy Murray
will be a very difficult match. I fight everything. I fight, and with Murray too”, lamented Ferrer after his loss on Tuesday.
