2010 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals; Highlights from Thursday
The Swiss tennis maestro Roger Federer brushed aside Robin Soderling of Sweden in two sets in his last round robin clash at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals on Thursday. The final match score was 7-6(5) 6-3. The battle concluded in a time period of one hour and twenty eight minutes.
The Swiss, by virtue of this victory, also confirmed his spot in the semi final round at the prestigious event in London.
The 29-year-old Federer played extremely well and looked in total control of his game to overpower his Swede opponent in straight sets. With this win, he also stands on top of Group B, as the Swiss has triumphed in all his three round robin matches at the elite eight man field without even missing a single set.
“That is why I am happy that all three matches were straight sets, I did not waste any energy, I am playing really well and I am through to the semis so it is all good right now,” explained the Fed Express after his match on Thursday.
Federer blasted a total of eleven aces and won 82% points on his opening serve to get past his opponent on Thursday. The sixteen time Grand Slam champion also took a total of twenty three winners in the process.
World number four Soderling, on the other hand, committed a total of 25 unforced errors in contrast to Federer’s eighteen, which made all the difference in the end.
Both Soderling and Federer played well in the opening set however it was the four time London winner, Roger Federer who managed to hit an excellent cross-court backhand winner in the tie-breaker to earn a fifty minutes one set lead in the match. He smashed seven aces and won 76% points on his opening serve.
Federer further improved his game in the decisive set and won a break during the eighth game to seal a win the end.
Meanwhile, in the doubles action, the number one pair of Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan thrashed their fourth seed opponents, Lukas Dlouhy and Leander Paes in their concluding round robin clash of the World Tour Finals on Thursday.
The American twins have also made it into the semi final round at the elite eight team field in London.
They continued their impressive run of form and simply outclassed their opponents to clinch a two setter win in the end. The final match score was 6-3 6-4. The 32-year-old twins from the United States of American now stand at number two in their group with Fyrstenberg and Matkowski on top as the Polish duo has won all their three encounters this week in London.
Bryans needed just fifty five minutes to successfully qualify for the final four round on Thursday.
They served flawlessly and won 90% points on their opening serve while blasted a total of two aces to make it an easy affair in the end.
After a strong start to the match, Bob along with his brother Mike won the opening set in twenty seven minutes. They won a total of thirty points overall. The tandem secured the final break during the sixth game of the opening set and maintained that lead to win it handily.
Seeded number one to win the title at the season finale, the Bryans continued the trend in the following set and secured the break in the first game and smartly maintained that lead to emerge victorious in the end.
This is the seventh time in the last eight seasons that the determined pair of Bryan brothers from the United States of America has reached the semi final stage in the World Tour Finals.
