2010 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals: Match Preview - Robin Soderling versus David Ferrer
The second singles match on Tuesday at the 2010 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals pits the fourth seed Robin Soderling versus the seventh seed David Ferrer of Spain. Both of them are attempting to get on the board here after losing their opening clash in the
round robin play on Sunday.
World number four Soderling opened his account in London with a two setter defeat at the hands of Andy Murray. The final match score was 6-2, 6-4. He won 79% of his opening serve points however just 33% of second serve points. Soderling enjoys a 2-3 mark
at the event and is the first player from Sweden to successfully make it into the elite eight man field in a row since Thomas Enqvist.
The right hander was bundled out of the tournament in the semi final round by Del Potro in three sets back in 2009. The final match score was 6-7, (1) 6-3, 7-6(3).
Currently ranked number four in the South African Airways ATP list, Soderling enters with a win loss mark of 56-21 on the season. He is also the first contender from Sweden to finish in the top ten in consecutive years since Thomas Enqvist back in 1999 and
2000.
The Swede posted his best result of the season by winning titles in Rotterdam and ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Paris, beating Mikhail Youzhny and Fernando Verdasco in the title battles respectively.
Soderling jumped to number four in the world after winning his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown in Paris last week after getting the better of Gael Monfils in straight sets.
He also finished as runners up in Barcelona, French Open, Bastad, semi finalist in Indian Wells, Miami, Valencia and quarter finalist in Marseille, Wimbledon, United States Open, Kuala Lumpur, Beijing, Shanghai and Stockholm.
Last month, he made his way into a total of four quarter finals in a row in Kuala Lumpur, Beijing, Shanghai and Stockholm.
World number seven Ferrer, on the other hand, comes in with a match record of 60-22 on the season. He is the second highest ranked Spaniard behind the world number one Rafael Nadal on the ATP tour.
The professional tennis ace from Spain double faulted on six occasions and broke four times in his two setter defeat at the hands of Roger Federer on Sunday. The final match score was 6-1, 6-4. Ferrer made his debut in the elite eight man field in London
back in 2007.
The Valencia resident is one of the three contenders to post at least sixty match victories during a season and hopes to level his career high of sixty one in 2007. The right hander captured two crowns in 2010 at Acapulco and Valencia, beating David Ferrer
and Marcel Granollers in the title battles respectively. He also made his way into the finals in Buenos Aires, Rome, Beijing and semi finals in Johannesburg, ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Monte Carlo, Madrid, Bastad, Kuala Lumpur and Barcelona in 2010.
This will be their sixth encounter of the season with the Swede leading the pair’s overall head to head series at 8-4. Ferrer has triumphed in two of their three clashes in the last seven weeks. Both of them are playing in London on the second occasion in
their careers.
The battle would definitely be highly exciting to watch as the loser will be eliminated from the event. Soderling has an edge over Ferrer as the Swede has been the more consistent contender in 2010.
