2010 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals: Roger Federer defeats Djokovic; to face Rafael Nadal in final
Swiss maestro Roger Federer moved into the finals of the World Tour Finals (WTF) at the O2 Arena after brushing aside Serb Novak Djokovic.
The former world number one moved into his sixth final at a WTF event after defeating Djokovic in straight sets. The Swiss star moved to a perfect 8-0 set score this week after winning yet another two-setter. He had earlier defeated
Robin Soderling, Andy Murray and David Ferrer in straight sets in the round robin (RR) stage.
Qualifying for the ninth straight year, Federer is set to make his sixth final appearance on Sunday. He had earlier reached the final five times during the 2003-07 period. With the exception of 2005 when he lost to Nikolay Davydenko,
Federer has won the title four times. Having had a tumultuous season this year with only one Grand Slam win, as opposed to the norm of multiple wins in a year, Federer hopes to win the WTF title to end the season on a high note.
Hopeful for another title win this year, a delighted Federer told the press,” I hope I can keep this up for a long, long time. I'm really enjoying myself and I hope I can produce something good tomorrow.”
In a matchup that everyone expected and hoped for, Federer goes on to play Spaniard Rafael Nadal in the final on Sunday. Nadal made his way into the semis after a tiring match against local Andy Murray. In a three-setter that lasted
a little over three hours, Nadal outlasted the Brit and finally emerged victorious. This will be the Spaniard’s first final appearance at a WTF event. His final run has twice been halted before in the semis by, ironically, Federer.
Although the ATP tennis season is over for Djokovic today, fans can expect more tennis action from their favourite Serb in a week’s time when Serbia meets France for the Davis Cup final. Djokovic joins teammates Janko Tipsarevic,
Viktor Troicki and Nenad Zimonjic to take on the French team of Michael Llodra, Gael Monfils, Gilles Simon and Arnaud Clement. Djokovic currently holds the third position in the ATP rankings with two title wins and a final appearance at the United States Open.
He successfully defended his titles at Dubai after defeating Mikhail Youzhny and then again at Beijing where he defeated Spaniard David Ferrer. Djokovic ends the season with a win loss mark of 57-16.
