2010 China Open Competition; Friday’s Review
The top seeds from both sides advanced into the semi final round of the 2010 China Open Competition on Friday in Beijing. The only major upset was the second seed Andy Murray of Scotland who was defeated by Ivan Ljubicic from Croatia
in two sets. The final match score was 6-3, 6-2.
World number two and last year’s winner Novak Djokovic ousted Gilles Simon in a two setter clash to confirm his semi final berth in Beijing on Friday. The final match score was 6-3, 6-2. It is the fifth occasion that the Serbian
has defeated Gilles.
“I am very happy that my serve is getting better and better, and hopefully I am going to use it more and more,” explained Novak after his victory on Friday.
Attempting to capture his second trophy of the season, Novak Djokovic of Serbia will next take on John Isner, a qualifier from the United States of America who upset Nikolay Davydenko, a fourth seed to advance into the final four
battle in Beijing. The final match score was 7-6 (4), 6-4. The American blasted a total of eighteen aces versus his opponent’s one on Friday.
Novak got the better of John in their previous clash back in March; however it took him over four hours and a total of six match points to top the American in this year’s Davis Cup ties.
From the women’s side, the new number one tennis ace Caroline Wozniacki, overpowered the former top ranked Ana Ivanovic in straight sets. The final match score was 7-6 (1), 6-3.
With her taped knee, the twenty year old Dane came back on the court at 3-1 in the decisive set and endured a late charge by Ana to get past the Serbian on the very first occasion in her career. Though painful, the injury did not
look serious, Caroline commented after her victory on Friday.
“I do not think it is too serious so hopefully I will be okay, but definitely it was a bit of a scare.”
Ana broke her on two occasions and double faulted nine times in her yesterday’s match however Caroline applied more pressure and nailed three of eleven break point chances.
The Dane, as a result of this victory will next take on Shahar Peer from Israel, who toppled her Swiss tennis foe Timea Bacsinszky in two sets on Friday. The final match score was 7-6 (4), 6-4.
Meanwhile, local favourite, Li Na also gave the Chinese crowd something to cheer about as she battled hard to hammer down Anastasija Sevastova, a qualifier from Latvia to make her way into the semi final round of the China Open
on the very first occasion in her career. The final match score was 7-6 (8), 6-3.
The world number fifteen struggled against her fifty five ranked foe in the opening set. In the decisive set, Li looked more confident and thus won it easily in the end. Anastasija, however didn’t give up till the end and broke
her serve on a couple of times to stay in the match.
Li Na, as a result of this victory will next face Vera Zvonareva of Russia who progressed into the semi final round in Beijing after thrashing out Francesca Schiavone in two sets. The final match score was 6-0, 6-2. The clash concluded
in a time period of fifty four minutes in Beijing. Zvonareva, after winning has also improved her match record to 10-0 versus Francesca.
The top ranked Brit, Andy Murray, on the other hand never looked confident in his yesterday’s clash as he couldn’t even produce a single break point and broke on three occasions in his match against Ljubicic. The Scot blasted a
total of four aces to Ivan’s twelve on Friday.
In other quarterfinal round, David Ferrer from Spain stunned his third seed foe Robin Soderling to get past him in two sets. The final match score was 6-2, 6-4.
