2010 China Open: Caroline Wozniacki enthroned champion

Ranked no. 1 in the world, Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki annihilated Russia's Vera Zvonareva to clinch the 2010 China Open Women's singles title.

Wozniacki initiated the match with a 6-3 win in the first set. Zvonareva however, reciprocated, taking the second set, 6-3. The deciding third set nevertheless, went in favour of Caroline, as she bagged the set based upon a 6-3 win, to come out victorious at
the tournament.

In the words of the Dane herself, "After I won my second match here I became world number one so Beijing will always be a special place for me and I am already looking forward to coming back." Wozniacki came to be the 20th player in the history of
the Women's Tennis Association to hold the no. 1 world ranking.

Caroline's quarter-final win against Serbia's Ana Ivanovic marked her highest ever world ranking. The unseeded Serb was sent home after losing 7-6 in the first set and 6-4 in the set that follow.

Additionally, Wozniacki defeated Israel's Shahar Pe'er in the semi-finals of the tournament, to make a place for herself in the championship final. In a brief two set match, Pe'er was thrashed 7-5 and 6-2 to be eliminated from the tournament.

Zvonareva got through to the next round after defeating Italy's Francesca Schiavone in the quarter-final match played between the two. The Russian thrashed Schiavone 6-0 in the first set and 6-2 in the second set to make it through to the next round.

Seeded no. 9 at the tournament, China's Li Na stood defeated on home-ground in the semi-finals, as Vera beat her 6-3 in the first set and 6-3 in the second set to mark a straight set victory over the Chinese professional.

The Czech Republic's Petra Kvitová faced defeat at the hands of Caroline Wozniacki in the third round of the championship. Wozniacki bagged a 6-3, 6-2, straight set win against Kvitova. Earlier in the tournament, the professional had eliminated Italy's Sara
Errani with a 6-4 and 6-2 drubbing to advance in the tournament.

In 2009, Wozniacki faced defeat at the hands of Spain's María José Martínez Sánchez, in the first round of the China Open. Sánchez qualified, based upon her 6-7, 7-6 and 6-0 win against the Dane.
Conclusively, Wozniacki has played commendably this year and has definitely risen in terms of her performance. With America's Serena Williams out of the way due to a severe injury, fortunately for Caroline, she clinched the World no. 1 spot. Her Beijing
win will most definitely boost her level of confidence as Wozniacki stated that she would definitely want to add a grand slam win to her tally.
