2010 China Open: Dane Caroline Wozniacki to take on Zvonareva in championship final
Seeded no. 1 at the tournament, Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki will be faced by the no. 2 seed, Russia's Vera Zvonareva in the final of the 2010 China Open Women's singles category.
Wozniacki ended Israel's Shahar Pe'er's reign, defeating her 7-5 in the first set, and 6-2 in the second set of the semi-final match played between the two. Alongside her, Zvonareva defeated China's Li Na on, taking the first set 6-3, followed by a 6-3 win
in the deciding second set of the semi-final of their draw.
Serbia's Ana Ivanovic was beaten in the quarter-finals, as Wozniacki annihilated the Serb in a straight set win. The two went nip and tuck in the first set; however Caroline bagged the set, 7-6. Furthermore, she took the second set 6-4 to secure a place for
herself in the semi-finals of the championship.
Zvonareva got through with Italy's Francesca Schiavone, defeating her 6-0 in the first set, and 6-2 in the second set of the quarter-finals of their draw. Schiavone lost a disappointing two sets in a row to be sent home.
Earlier to her quarter-final win, Wozniacki got rid of Italy's Sara Errani, thrashing her 6-4 in the first set and 6-2 to follow, in the second set of the second round of the tournament. Errani battled it out with China's Peng Shuai defeating her, 1-6, 6-4
and 6-1 to face Caroline.
Along the side of which, Zvonareva defeated compatriot Maria Kirilenko to advance in the tournament. Kirilenko was beaten 5-7, 6-4 and 6-2. Earlier to this, Vera got through with Germany's Andrea Petkovic, thrashing her 6-4 in the first set and 6-1 in the second,
to mark a straight set win.
Russia's Dinara Safina was defeated as early as in the first round, just as Zvonareva annihilated her fellow country-woman, 6-4 in the first set, and after remaining evenly matched in the second set, defeating her 7-6.
In the year 2009, Wozniacki was defeated in the first round of the China Open Women's singles category, as Spain's María José Martínez Sánchez beat her 6-7, 7-6 and 6-0. Zvonareva however, made it through to the quarter-finals, where she was unfortunately eliminated
by Frenchwoman, Marion Bartoli. Bartoli defeated Vera 3-6, 7-5 and 6-2 in the the match played between the two.
Even though Wozniacki's semi-final win marked her highest ever World ranking, Zvonareva fared better at the China Open last year. Quite evidently, the professional has risen in terms of her performance, as this year she made it through to the finals. The championship
final is most likely to be unpredictable, but action packed nonetheless.
