2010 China Open: David Ferrer canters through to championship final
Seeded no. 8 at the tournament, Spain's David Ferrer defeated Croatia's Ivan Ljubičić to make a place for himself in the 2010 China Open Men's singles final.
Ferrer got off to a good start, defeating Ljubičić 6-4 in the first set. The Croatian however, turned the tables on David, as he took the second set 6-4. The deciding third set however, went in favour of the Spaniard as he bagged the decider 6-4.
David will be opposed by the no. 1 seed, Serbia's Novak Djokovic, in the championship final. Djokovic eliminated America's John Isner in his semi-final match to make it through. The wild card entrant faced defeat at the hands of ‘Nole’, as despite remaining
evenly contested in the first set, he was defeated 7-6 in the first set and 6-4 in the second.
Before his semi-final win, Ferrer got past Sweden's Robin Soderling to advance to the next round. In a brief, two set tussle, the Spaniard defeated Soderling 6-2 and 6-4, verily, to send the Swede home.
China's Lu Yen-hsun was also eliminated from the tournament at the hands of Ferrer in the second round. Ferrer took the first set 6-3. However, Yen bounced back to take the second set 6-3. It was however the Spaniard that came out victorious, based upon his
6-1 win in the third set of the match.
Amongst the professionals to have been sent home was Uzbekistan's, Denis Istomin. Ferrer initiated the first round match with a 6-4 win in the first set, followed by a 6-1 win in the third.
In the year 2009, Ferrer was unseeded in the China Open. Unfortunately for him, the Spaniard also lost in the first round, and was thus eliminated from the tournament. Wild card entrant, Russia's Marat Safin, however, triumphed upon defeating David 6-5 in the
first set and 6-4 in the deciding second set, to make it through to the next round.
Nevertheless, 2010 wasn't really the year for Ferrer. David failed to make it past the second round of the Australian Open. Furthermore, the professional proved incapable of making it past the third round at the French Open, and was eliminated in the fourth
round of the 2010 Wimbledon championship. Similarly, Ferrer only managed to make it through to the fourth round of the U.S. Open.
Even though Djoko is seeded no. 1 at the 2010 China Open - and rightfully so - Ferrer's limitless potential puts him in a good position, making it possible for the final to go either way.
