2010 China Open: First Round Qualifiers (Men's Draw)
Eight greatly able professionals made it through to the second round of the 2010 China Open, eliminating their competitors in the first round of their draws. Unfortunately, on the contrary, eight sportsmen were made to go home, as their hopes were dashed in
the initial round of the tournament.
Seeded no. 1 at the championship, Serbia's Novak Djokovic conveniently defeated China's Gong Maoxin in his first round match, defeating the professional 6-1 in the first set and 6-3 in the second set of the match played between
the two. Djokovic will be facing America's Mardy Fish in the second round of his draw.
Mardy Fish eliminated Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic in straight sets to make a place for himself in the following round. Tipsarevic was defeated 6-2 and 7-6, after having lost a tie-breaker to the American sportsman.
Frenchman Gilles Simon got past American Sam Querrey to make it through to the next round. Simon got off to a good start, taking the first set 6-3. However, Querrey turned the tables on the athlete to take the second set 6-3. The deciding third set nevertheless
went in favor of Simon, as the professional took the set 6-2.
Gilles will be facing Germany's Michael Berrer in the second round. Prior to qualifying for the second round, Berrer got past the Czech Republic's Tomas Berdych in a three set tussle. Berdych initiated the match by taking
the first set 6-4. It was however all downhill for Tomas from there on as Berrer successfully took the second set 7-5 and went on to win the third set 6-2 to send the no. 5 seed home.
Amongst the triumphant few was also Russia's Nikolay Davydenko. Seeded no. 4 in the tournament, the Russian annihilated German Florian Mayer two sets in a row (6-3, 6-4) to be put through to the next round.
Davydenko will go head to head with Croatia's Marin Cilic in the second round of their draw. Earlier, in order to make it through to the second round, Cilic defeated Brazil's Thomaz Belluci 6-2, 6-2 to advance at the championship.
Wild card entry American John Isner got rid of Chinese Taipei's Yang Tsung-hua, defeating him 7-6 upon winning a tie-breaker and proceeding to win the second set 6-3, to secure a place in the round to follow.
Isner will be opposed by Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber. The German defeated Spain's Fernando Verdasco prior to cruising through to the next round. Verdasco's journey came to an end, just as he was thrashed 6-2 and 7-6 by Kohlschreiber.
