2010 China Open: Quarter-finalists (Women's Draw)
With Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova out for the rest of the season, the professionals able enough to have made it through to the quarter-finals of the 2010 China Open battle it out for a place in the semi-finals of the tournament.
Known for cracking the occassional 'tweener,' Italy's Francesca Schiavone got through Russia's Vera Dushevina to make it through to the quarter-finals of the tournament. Schiavone bounced back in the second set of the match, winning it 6-3 and furthermore,
taking the deciding third set 6-1, prior to losing the first set 6-4.
Seeded no. 5 at the tournament, the Italian will be facing Russia's Vera Zvonareva in the quarter-finals of their draw. Earlier to making it through to the quarter-finals, Zvonareva eliminated compatriot Maria Kirilenko. Kirilenko was sent home after losing
7-5, 4-6 and 2-6 to her fellow countrywoman.
Alongside Schiavone, Israel's Shahar Pe'er defeated Serbia's Bojana Jovanovski to make a place for herself in the round to follow. In a crisp two set match, the 15th seed annihilated Bojana, thrashing her 6-1 in the first set and 6-2 in the second set of the
match.
Pe'er will be opposite Switzerland's Timea Bacsinszky in the quarter-final match of her draw. Bacsinszky toughed it out against Russia's Elena Vesnina, defeating her 6-2 and 6-3 in straight sets to make it through to the next round.
Germany's Angelique Kerber will go head to head with China's Li Na in the third round to fight it out for a place in the quarter-finals. Li Na got rid of Russia's Alisa Kleybanova, defeating her 6-1 and 6-4, in the second round of the tournament.
Kerber defeated Romania's Alexandra Dulgheru, 6-2 and 6-1, prior to making it through to the third round. Along with Kerber, Russia's Nadia Petrova will play against Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova in the third round of their draw, to make it through to the quarter-finals.
Prior to the third round, Petrova sent Ukraine's Alona Bondarenko home, thrashing her 6-3 and 7-5. Sevastova defeated Slovakia's Dominika Cibulková 2-6, 6-1 and 6-2, to be put through to the third round of the tournament.
Additionally, seeded no. 1 at the championship, Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki will be faced by Russia's Petra Kvitov in the third round of her draw. Apart from her, Serbia's Ana Ivanonvic will be facing Russian Elena Dementieva in the third round, to tough it
out for a place at the quarter-finals of the championship.
