2010 China Open: Semi-finalists (Women's Draw)
Seeded no. 1 at the tournament, Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki's third round win against the Czech Republic's Petra Kvitová marked her highest ever World ranking. Presently ranked no. 1 in the World, Wozniacki is amongst the four able professionals to have made
it through to the semi-finals of the 2010 China Open.
Serbia's Ana Ivanovic faced defeat at the hands of Wozniacki, losing the first set 7-6, in spite of remaining evenly contested with the Dane. Furthermore, Wozniacki thrashed Ivanovic, beating her 6-4 in the second set, to make it through to the semi-finals
of the tournament.
Alongside her, the 15th seed, Israel's Shahar Pe'er, eliminated Switzerland's Timea Bacsinszky, defeating her 7-6 in the first set and 6-4 in the set to follow. Pe'er will be opposed by Wozniacki in the semi-finals of their draw.
Unfortunately for Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova, her reign was ended in the quarter-finals as China's Li Na defeated her 7-6 and 6-3 to make it through to the semi-finals of the tournament. On the contrary, seeded no. 2 at the championship, Russian Vera Zvonareva
made a place for herself in the semi's, defeating Italy's Francesca Schiavone in the quarter-finals.
Zvonareva performed flawlessly, thrashing Schiavone 6-0 in the first set, followed by a 6-2 win in the second. The Russian will be faced by Li Na in the semi-finals of the championship.
Earlier to Wozniacki's quarter-final win, she had defeated the Czech Republic's Petra Kvitova 6-3 and 6-2, in straight sets to proceed at the tournament. Along the side of which, Pe'er sent Serbia's Bojana Jovanovski home, thrashing her 6-1 and 6-2 in the third
round of their draw.
Germany's Angelique Kerber was sent home after losing 2-6 and 0-6 to China's Li Na in the third round match played between the two. In contrast to which, Russia's Vera Zvonareva defeated compatriot Maria Kirilenko in the third round match of their draw. Vera
defeated Kirilenko 6-4 and 6-2 in the second and third set, prior to losing the first set 6-7.
Shockingly, defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova was defeated in the first qualifying round of the tournament to be sent home. Kuznetsova was opposed by Italy's Roberta Vinci. Vinci took the first set 6-3 just before Svetlana bounced back to take the second
set 6–2. The deciding third set however, went in favour of Roberta, as she bagged it based on her 6-3 win.
With the Russian vindicator out of the way, the tournament final will give rise to a new champion. Considering the fact that the professionals have worked hard to make their way up, the title is quite clearly anybody's to take.
