2010 China Open: Serbia's Novak Djokovic clinches championship title
The Serbian vindicator, Novak Djokovic came out victorious at the 2010 China Open, defeating Spain's David Ferrer to take the championship title.
Lasting 1 hour and 24 minutes, the match came to a close as Djokovic thrashed Ferrer 6-2 in the first set, followed by a 6-4 win in the second. Shortly after the win, Novak said, "I started off really well but then I lost the momentum. I kind of lost the
rhythm, got him back into the match with some unforced errors."
The Serb went on to state that he thought the match wasn't a nice looking one from either side. He added that him and Ferrer, both made a lot of unforced errors and that the Spaniard made his life a little bit easier by the end of the second set, where Djokovic
made a comeback, all thanks to David's errors.
Prior to Djoko's championship win, he had defeated America's John Isner in the semi-final of the tournament to make it through. Upon being tied in the first set, the wild card entrant was dismally defeated 7-6 in the first set and 6-2 in the second set of
that match.
Meanwhile, David Ferrer got through with Croatia's Ivan Ljubičić in the other semi-final to make place for himself in the final. Ljubičić had lost the first set 4-6 but he bounced back in the second, only to take it 6-4. The decisive third set went in the
favour of Ferrer nonetheless, as he bagged it based upon his 6-4 win.
Additionally, Novak had defeated the Frenchman, Gilles Simon in the quarter-final to proceed at the championship. Simon was beaten 6-3 and 6-2 in a crisp two set match, only to be sent home.
Luckily for Djokovic, America's Mardy Fish retracted from the tournament due to an injury, just hours before he was to play the Serb in the second round. Seeded no. 1 at the tournament, Novak made it through his initial match, defeating China's Gong Maoxin
6-1 and 6-3 to breeze through the rounds to follow.
Now, the 23-year-old Serb is scheduled to play at the ATP Shanghai Masters in the following week. Djokovic exclaimed that the China Open win definitely boosted his level of confidence and that he hopes that he'll be able to keep it up as far as the Shanghai
Masters go.
