2010 China Open Tournament: Novak Djokovic lifts the title in Beijing
World number two Novak Djokovic from Serbia captured the eighteen crown of his career on Monday after ousting David Ferrer in a two-setter clash to win the 2010 China Open Men’s singles competition in a rain-postponed title battle. The final match score
was 6-2, 6-4. Novak was leading 3-1 when the match was delayed on Sunday.
The top seed Djokovic, who only two days ago successfully qualified for the year ending Barclays ATP World Tour in London, registered his name as the first back-to-back champion in the history of the China Open, where he enjoys a career record of 9-0.
The 23-year-old Novak as a result of winning the title in Beijing secured 500 South African Airways 2010 ATP Rankings points and was given prize money of $500,000 on Monday. This was his fifth victory in nine clashes over David, who was given 300 points
along with prize money of $230,000. Ferrer, as a result of this loss has slipped down to an 8-10 record in ATP World Tour title battles.
The eight seed David looked out of touch right from the start of the match against Novak, who converted four of six break point chances and won seventy one percent of his service break points to seal win in a time period of eighty five minutes in Beijing.
"I think he played with no mistakes and I made little mistakes in the second set at 4 3. I had my chance there. I had two advantages and I hit one double fault. But he played well. Me, maybe when I lost this game, I lost a little bit of my concentration,”
said Ferrer after his defeat on Monday.
The 23-year-old Novak, on the other hand, is the third contender this year to successfully defend two ATP World Tour crowns, along with the world number one Rafael Nadal and Marin Cilic.
Earlier in February, the Serbian triumphed in the Dubai Duty Tennis Tournament after thrashing out Youzhny in another rain-postponed clash. He enjoys a final record of 18-12 on the season.
The 28-year-old David was playing in his fourth ATP World Tour final in 2010. The Spaniard shares a match record of 52-18 this season and is only nine clash victories short of his career best season back in 2007, when he triumphed in a total of sixty one
meetings.
"It is very important for me for to go to London for the season ending tournament, so I need to play very good to be there," declared Ferrer on Monday.
