2010 China Open Women’s doubles competition: Olga Govortsova and Chuang Chia-Jung win the title
Olga Govortsova and Chuang Chia-Jung turned out to be a shocker for the world’s best doubles team in the final battle of the 2010 China Open Women’s doubles competition on Sunday, capturing their first crown together with a three-setter victory over the
top seed duo of Flavia Pennetta and Gisela Dulko in Beijing. The final match score was 7-6(2), 1-6, 10-7.
Jung and Olga who teamed up on the very first occasion in Dubai earlier this season but had never made it beyond the final eight of any championship until this week, missed the middle set in only thirty two minutes and seemed headed for loss as they fell
behind 6-4 in the match tie-break, however, they bounced back well on time for a 10-7 victory.
"Because it is in China it is very special for me. Olga and I have played together about half a year now and this was our best week together. We played aggressively and that was the key today," Chuang said after the match in Beijing.
Both the players looked quite satisfied and contented with each other’s performances as Olga said, "Almost all of our matches this week went to a tie-break, and when we get there we play so focused. Chuang Chia-Jung
was smashing superb volleys and I was playing hard from the baseline. Pennetta and Dulko are so good, we are really glad.”
She further added that she is now really looking forward to come here next year and play even better in order to defend her title in Beijing.
Chuang Chia-Jung and Olga Govortsova made their way into the title battle of the 2010 China Open Women’s doubles tournament in Beijing after getting the better of second seed pair of Yaroslava Shvedova and Vania King in straight sets. Those two teams along
with Pennetta and Dulko will be in the four team doubles field at the year ending WTA Tournament in Doha, starting from next month.
Pennetta and Dulko are ranked number two and three in the doubles WTA rankings in the world, whereas, Govortsova and Chuang are not even included in the top twenty list by the Women Tennis Association.
In other action in Beijing, the title battle of the singles competition was delayed to Monday as a result of rain. In the singles final at the 2010 WTA China Open, two top seeds will contest for the trophy victory in Beijing as the world number one Caroline
Wozniacki and second seed Vera Zvonareva of Russia will face each other at 7:30 p.m. local time in Beijing on Monday.
Meanwhile, in the men’s doubles final, the top seed American pair of Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan lifted their tenth crown with a two-setter victory over Marcin Matkowski and Mariusz Fyrstenberg on Sunday. The final match score was 6-1, 7-6(5). The title came
as their tenth one in their tenth final this season.
The 32-year-old twins successfully defended their crown at the ATP China Open doubles event, after thrashing out Andy Roddick and Mark Knowles in the final back in 2009. They are the first doubles pair to capture back-to-back trophies at the China Open and
as a result improved an 8-0 record in Beijing.
Matkowski and Fyrstenberg, on the other hand, who were seeded number four to win the title in Beijing, did not even miss a single set on their way into the finals. It is the second consecutive week that they have fallen short in a title battle, having ended
as finalists last week at the Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur. They captured their eleventh ATP World Tour team crown back in June in Eastbourne after surpassing Skupski and Fleming in straight sets.
