2010 Compuware NHL Premier Series – Vancouver Canucks beat Carolina Hurricanes 5-1

The 68th game of the NHL regular season saw the Vancouver Canucks host the Carolina Hurricanes. The match took place this Sunday, 17th October 2010 at the Rogers Arena. The Carolina Hurricanes played the 4th game and the
Vancouver Canucks played 5th game of the campaign thus far. Around 19,000 fans came to support their cherished teams. The home team dominated the proceedings as they scored every now and then and with the energy level they maintained, they won the
match 5-1.
1st Period
The early few moments of the match were dominated by the away side, Carolina Hurricanes who made chances but couldn’t find the back of the net due to the splendid goal keeping of Corey Schneider. They came up with strong attacks and with the passing and
defence they maintained, it looked as if they would score.
This was not to be as the home team started to gain momentum as the match progressed. After the 5th minute, the Vancouver Canucks started to attack more often and as a result dictate the game. The period saw Vancouver Canucks come up with some
splendid passing as well, shots that were destined to go into the goal. The Vancouver Canucks managed to convert one of the chances into goals in the 6th minute and take the lead. The goal was scored by Andrew Alberts from 12 feet through a wrist
off shot.
Taking the lead, the Vancouver Canucks pressed on for another goal and their search was successful when they scored once again in the 10th minute to establish a 2 goal lead. The goal was a result of an excellent 14 feet wrist off shot by Mason
Raymond.
The period ended with the score on 2-0 in favour of the Vancouver Canucks as they scored twice out of the 12 goal attempts they made. The Carolina Hurricanes also piled up 10 shots but none were able to find the back of the net.
2nd Period
The 2nd period saw the early stages being dominated by the Carolina Hurricanes once again as they attacked with full force. But one flaw in doing so was the fact that they left open spaces at the back that the Vancouver Canucks exploited.
They started the play from their goal, displaying extravagant passing along with perfect team work they worked hard for a goal. Their hard work paid off as they scored in the 10th minute to establish a strong and comfortable 3 goal lead. The goal
was scored by Mikael Samuelsson from 11 feet by a snap off shot.
With the strong lead, the Vancouver Canucks gave the youngsters a chance to taste the competitive NHL. This resulted in some weak play being observed during the period due to the relative inexperience of the new roster. The Carolina Hurricanes pounced on
the opportunity and scored a goal in the 19th minute to pull 1 back. The goal scorer was Patrick O’Sullivan from 29 feet.
The period saw an end with the Vancouver Canucks leading 3-1. Both teams scored once during the course of the period with the Vancouver Canucks making 7 goal attempts and the Carolina Hurricanes making 12 goal attempts.
3rd Period
The 3rd period saw the home team dominate and dictate the proceedings from the start firing shots regularly. This resulted in some good and goal scoring opportunities coming in the home teams favour but they couldn’t score.
However, the Vancouver Canucks converted a chance in the 7th minute to take the score to 4-1 establishing a strong 3 goal lead. The goal was scored by Mason Raymond through a splendid wrist off shot from close range.
The Vancouver Canucks were content on completely demolishing the away side and pressed on with attacks. They were successful in doing so in the 15th minute when Ryan Kesler scored. The goal came through a 49 feet slap off shot.
The period ended as the Vancouver Canucks won the match 5-1 after they scored twice in the last period out of 9 goal attempts and the Carolina Hurricanes couldn’t score any goals out of the 11 goal attempts they made.
