2010 Compuware NHL Premier Series weekend roundup: Colorado Avalanche lose 2-5 against the New York Islanders
This past Saturday saw the New York Islanders play host to the Colorado Avalanche with both teams playing in the 5th game of the campaign. The game had a slow start with both teams ending the 1st period goalless with 10,000 people attending
the game at the Nassau Coliseum.
The 1st period didn’t see much though both teams were able to pile up quite a few shots at the opposing goal but none found the back of the net. The score was deadlocked at the end of the 20 minutes with the Colorado Avalanche coming up with 9
shots and the New York Islander making 7 shots.
The 2nd period was exciting and productive in terms of goals as the period saw 3 goals being scored. All 3 goals came in favour of the home team, New York Islanders. The goal was scored in the 14th minute by Milan Jurcina from 58 feet
slap off. Taking the lead, the New York Islanders pressed on in search of another and scored once again in the 19th minute. The goal was scored by Josh Bailey from 31 feet through a wrist off shot.
Establishing the 2 goals lead, the home team pressed with regular attacks and scored again in the 19th minute. The goal scorer was again Josh Bailey who scored this time from close range. The period ended with the score 3-0 in favour of the New
York Islanders after they managed to fire 10 shots and the Colorado Avalanche made 8 goal attempts.
The final period was saw the Colorado Avalanche score in the 3rd minute through a splendid 50 feet slap off by Chris Stewart. With the score 3-1, both teams pressed for scoring to ensure that they could win. The New York Islanders was the stronger
of the two teams when they scored in the 5th minute to restore the 3 goal lead. The goal was scored by Michael Grabner. The next goal came in favour of the Colorado Avalanche that took the score to 4-2. The goal was scored by T.J Gilardi through
a fabulous backhand.
However, the New York Islanders sealed the win when they scored in the 20th minute to win the game 5-2. The goal was scored by John Tavares from a long range 64 feet shot.
Florida Panthers win 6-0 against the Tampa Bay Lightning
The 59th game of the regular season that took place between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Florida Panthers saw the Florida Panthers thrash the visitors 6-0 playing on home soil.
The 1st period was a very productive one as the Florida Panther scored 4 goals during the period. The first goal was scored by Cory Stillman who scored from 18 feet. The goal gave the home team confidence and they pressed on for another goal.
This hard work resulted in them scoring once again in the 15th minute when David Booth scored through a backhand shot.
With the 2 goals lead to their advantage, the Florida Panthers was urged by the home fans to score again. They responded immediately as they scored in the 16th minute to take the score to 3-0. The goal was scored by Steven Reinprecht’s backhand
shot from 16 feet.
The Tampa Bay Lightning also managed to fire in a few shots but the attacks didn’t have the power and the plays weren’t as energetic compared to those of the Florida Panthers. The home team finished the period by scoring another goal in the 19th
minute that was scored by Dennis Wideman from 42 feet that took the score to 4-0 at the end in favour of the Florida Panthers.
The 2nd period didn’t see much as there were no goals in the 20 minutes and the period ended with the same score as the 1st period. The Florida Panthers made 7 goal attempts and the Tampa Bay Lightning made 11 goal attempts but all
were successful to find the back of the net.
The final period saw the Florida Panthers score in the 8th minute establish a 5 goal lead when David Booth bagged his 2nd goal of the match. The Florida Panthers totally demolished the Tampa Bay Lightning in when they scored for the
final time in the 18th minute to seal the win. The goal was scored by Rostislav Olesz. The match ended with the score 6-0 in favour of the Florida Panthers.
"It just feels good to put six goals on the board," Booth said. "That gives the whole team confidence."
