2010 Compuware NHL Premiere League Updates – Pittsburgh Penguins win 5-2 against the Montreal Canadiens
The first game of Wednesday and the 642nd game of the National Hockey League saw the Montreal Canadiens play host to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The match was played at the Centre Bell Arena in front of around 21,000 fans. Though the Montreal Canadiens
had managed to overpower the Penguins on quite a few occasions previously but they were the weakest link this time out. This certainly turned out to be the case as Pittsburgh Penguins won the match 5-2. Jordan Staal was named the star selection of the match
for his crucial goal and two assists.
A cautious start to the match was observed by both teams. However, each passing minute saw both teams change their strategy and get on the attacks more often. Chances started to flow and with the strong pieces of play, a goal was surely on the way.
It took some time but the deadlock was finally broken when Pittsburgh Penguins took the lead through Alex Goligoski’s goal in the 13th minute from a long range powerful strike. The joy was short lived as Montreal Canadiens started stronger after
the restart as scored in the very next minute to level the scores.
The goal was scored by Tomas Plekanec from a well placed flick shot. Both teams made a few more goal attempts but no goals were scored as the period ended with both teams making 8 goal attempts each and scores level on 1-1.
Montreal Canadiens their dominating form at the start of the second period and attacks after attacks were piled up. They could have very scored in the very first minute but the shot went wide.
Montreal Canadiens were able to capitalize from the start they made and took the lead successfully scoring in the 3rd minute through David Desharnais to get into the lead. This time it was Penguins turn to respond.
With the strong pieces of play and brilliant passing, the Penguins managed to score through Tyler Kennedy from a quick fired shot in the 5th minute to level the scores. The match progressed smoothly after this and numerous goal attempts and it
looked as if the period would end with the scores level.
However, the home fans were silenced when Pittsburgh took the lead as a result of Jordan Staal’s shot with just 11 seconds in the period remaining. The period ended with the Penguins leading 3-2.
The final period saw the Pittsburgh Penguins dominate the game and score couple of goals to come up with a comfortable win in the end.
It looked that the Penguins were the home team as they had confidence oozing in the game play and they absolutely dominated every department. The Penguins scored through Alex Goligoski in the third minute to double their lead.
With just over nine minutes remaining in the game, Penguins sealed the match with a goal scored by Chris Kunitz from a long range powerful strike as the Penguins won the match 5-2 in the end. The final period saw the Pittsburgh Penguins making 13 goal attempts
while the Montreal Canadiens made 5 goal attempts.
