2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – Atlanta Thrashers win 5-4 in a tough battle against the Anaheim Ducks after shootout

The 53rd game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series took place at the Honda Centre, home of the Anaheim Ducks. The game saw the Anaheim Ducks play the Atlanta Thrashers who were looking to keep the winning streak intact. The game took place
this Friday with around 13,000 fans coming in support of their respective teams. The Atlanta Thrashers played their 4th game of the campaign while the Anaheim Ducks were playing in their 5th game. Both teams wanted to win the game to
maintain the winning streak. However, it was the Atlanta Thrashers who won the match at the end with the 5-4 score after shootout.

1st Period
The Atlanta Thrashers were really quick out of the blocks as they came up with 4 quick attacks in the opening minute of the period. Out of these 4 attacks, the Atlanta Thrashers scored in the 1st minute to take the lead.
The goal was scored by Anthony Stewart from 44 feet through a splendid slap off shot. The Atlanta Thrashers were able to maintain a good and tight defence as well as very strong offence. However, after a few minutes into the period, the home team started
to settle and come up with attacks too. Their defence and offence both started to get solid and they managed to penetrate the tough defence of the Atlanta Thrashers.
The Anaheim Ducks were working hard and trying to put the pieces together so that they could score. They were rewarded for this with a goal in the 9th minute to level things. The goal was scored through an 8 feet superb backhand by Corey Perry.
The period end with the team deadlocked at 1-1. The Anaheim Ducks and Atlanta Thrashers both scored one goal out of the 11 and 10 goal attempts respectively.
2nd Period
The 2nd period didn’t start off like the first one but as the period progressed, it caught pace. Both teams started to take the game to the next level with the offence.
But this time it was the Anaheim Ducks who scored first and took the lead for the first time. The goal scorer was Lydman who scored in the 10th minute from an excellent 19 feet backhand. Taking the lead, the home team was looking to establish
a further strong lead.
This was not to be as they were caught on a counterattack and the Atlanta Thrashers scored to level things once again. The goal was scored by Chris Thornburn whose shot after deflection saw the back of the net.
However, the Anaheim Ducks managed to take the lead once again right at the death as they scored in the last minute to take the score to 3-2. The goal came through a Temmu Sellane shot from 11 feet. During the period, the Anaheim Ducks scored 2 goal making
18 goal attempts and the Atlanta Thrashers scored 1 goal out of the 8 goal attempts.
3rd Period
The 3rd period was one of the tough 20 minutes where the game was all about technical side. Both teams tried to penetrate past the defence but it seemed impossible.
However, this changed as the period progressed and the Anaheim Ducks scored in the 7th minute to establish a 2 goal lead. The Captain Ryan Getzlaf scored the goal leading by example from 10 feet. With the score on 4-2 the Anaheim Ducks fans believed
that they won the match.
The Atlanta Thrashers were not done yet, they started to attack once again and with some big guns on their roster, they scored in the 11th minute to cut the lead to 1 goal. The goal was scored by Anthony Stewart.
The Atlanta Thrashers pressed on for another goal and when Anthony Stewart completed his hat-trick in the 15th minute, the score was level once again. The period ended with the score 4-4 and the game went into overtime.
The overtime saw very less chances for both teams and neither of the teams scored. When the shootout started, it was Nigel Dawes’s goal that won the Atlanta Thrashers the match with the score 5-4.
At the end, Anthony Stewart said "It feels great," Stewart said.
"I can't shut it down right now. I'm happy to contribute any way I can and I am still trying to prove myself in this League. So any way I can contribute is great."
