2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – Boston Bruins defeat the Washington Capitals 3-1
The 74th game of 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series took us to Washington where the Boston Bruins were up against the Washington Capitals. The game took place at the Verizon Centre this past Tuesday. The game saw around 19,000 fans come in support
of their respective teams. The Boston Bruins played in the 4th and the Washington Capitals played in their 6th game of the NHL Compuware Series thus far. At the end of the 3 periods, it was the Boston Bruins who won the match 3-1.
1st Period
When the proceedings kicked off in the first period, it was the Washington Capitals who was able to dominate the game and dictate.
The offence they had was a very strong one that bombarded shots on the opposing goal every now and then. The defence was also at the top of its game during the opening 10 minutes displaying some accurate tackles and winning possession at crucial attacks.
Not only this, but the Washington Capitals was also coming up with some excellent pieces of game.
On the other hand, the Boston Bruins tried hard to get past the opposing defence but couldn’t do so due to the fact that they had very strong and united defence. The smoothness in the game started to pay off after the 8th minute when they started
to come up with attacks too. Their hard work and constant goal threat resulting in the Boston Bruins taking the lead in the 10th minute. The goal was scored by David Krejci from a distance of 36 feet through a wrist off shot.
The Boston Bruins didn’t take the foot off the gas after scoring and the constant hard work saw them scoring once again in the 12th minute to establish a 2 goal lead. The goal was scored by Milan Lucic who scored through wrist off shot from 29
feet.
The period ended with the score 2-0 in favour of the Boston Bruins who made 8 goal attempts compared to the 10 shots of Washington Capitals who didn’t score any goal.
2nd Period
When the 2nd period started, both teams were content on letting the opposing team score. Both teams came out on the pitch determined. Boston Bruins were determined on maintaining the lead and the Washington Capitals determined to score and take
the lead.
With the period more of a defensive battle, there were still goal scoring opportunities for both teams. It was the finishing that hindered the way of the players. But in the 8th minute the Washington Capital’s determination proved to be the greater
of the two as they cut the 2 goals lead.
The goal was scored by Marcus Johansson through a wrist off shot hit from 25 feet. The period saw both teams coming up with goal scoring chances but their finishing let them down.
The end of the period saw the score 2-1 in favour of the Boston Bruins. During the course of the period, the Boston Bruins didn’t score any goals out of the 8 goal attempts they made, whereas the Washington Capitals scored one goal out of the 8 goal attempts
they made.
3rd Period
With the start of the 3rd period, it was the Boston Bruins who outplayed the Washington Capitals in every department.
Displaying some excellent ice hockey ability, the Boston Bruins scored in the 3rd minute to regain the 2 goals lead and took the score to 3-1. The goal was scored by Matt Hunwick that was a result of a wrist off shot from 47 feet.
From then on, the Boston Bruins concentrated on the defence and the Washington Capitals kept on firing shots taking advantage of the Boston Bruins staying back. The period saw numerous goal attempts made by the home team but they couldn’t prevent the Boston
Bruins from winning. During the course of the period, the Boston Bruins scored 1 goal out of the 5 goal attempts, whereas the Washington Capitals didn’t score any goal out of the 18 goal attempts they made.
The Boston Bruins Coach said after the game, "We've been on the road enough, but we're not going to complain," Bruins Coach Claude Julien said. "The more road games we play right now, the less we have to play at the end."
"For the most part, I know you're protecting a 3-1 lead and the other team is going to throw everything at you so they kind of dominated in the shot column in the third period,"
Julien said, "but we had some kills to do and I thought our penalty killing crew did a great job against a pretty potent power play."
