2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – Calgary Flames win 6-2 against the Columbus Blue Jackets

Friday, 22nd October 2010 saw the 93rd game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series take place. The match took place at the Nationwide Arena, as the home team Columbus Blue Jackets were up against the Calgary Flames. The Calgary Flames
played their 7th game of the season, whereas the Columbus Blue Jackets played their 6th game of the campaign thus far. The away team dominated the proceeding from the start, as they won the match 6-2 at the end.
1st Period
The away team started the game with a lot of confidence displaying some excellent skill on the field. The game saw exchange of good passes that were pin point and found players who were in open position. The defence of the Calgary Flames was no different,
they formed a strong back line that was almost non porous.
The Calgary Flames worked hard in trying to gain the lead and were successful in doing so by scoring in the 9th minute during a power play. The goal was scored by Niklas Hagman from 11 feet through a brilliant backhand shot.
Taking the lead, the away team didn’t back down and pressed on in search for another goal. The reason for their attacking mentality was the fact that the defence was very supportive. Often at times, it was the defensive player who found the front players
in open position with a long pass that was perfectly executed. Their skill, confidence and hard work paid off once again in the 15th minute when they doubled their lead. The goal that took the lead to 2-0 was scored by Ian White through a power
shot hit from 46 feet.
The home team was backed by the fans and that seemed to work as they scored in the 17th minute to cut down the lead to 1 goal. The goal was scored by Derek Dorsett who scored from 20 feet through some fabulous wrist work. The score at the time
was 2-1 in favour of the away team.
The Calgary Flames was desperate to restore the 2 goals lead and attacked the opposing goal in order to do that. They were rewarded for the constant attacking in the 20th minute when they scored through Rene Bourque from a power shot from 56 feet.
The period ended with the score 3-1 in favour of the Calgary Flames who made 10 goal attempts and scored thrice and the Columbus Blue Jackets made just 4 goal attempts scoring 1 goal.
2nd Period
The Calgary Flames carried on from where they left on in the last period and the dominating and attacking performance continued. Regular attacks from the very start of the period were rewarded in the 6th minute when they scored. The goal was scored
by Rene Bourque through 18 feet perfectly placed shot.
The score was 4-1 at the time and the Columbus Blue Jackets released that they need to do something if they want to have any chance of making a comeback. Though they made some goal attempts but they couldn’t find the back of the net.
The period ended as the Calgary Flames led the match 4-1 and the scored one goal out of the 5 goal attempts they made and the Columbus Blue Jackets made just 7 goal attempts but couldn’t score any goals.
3rd Period
The 3rd period saw the home team come out with a lot of confidence that could be seen in their defence and the offence. They made dangerous attacks when the period started. A goal was certain to come and it did in the 11th minute when
the Columbus Blue Jackets scored to take the score to 4-2. The goal was scored by Jan Hejda who scored from 49 feet through a brilliant strike.
The Calgary Flames responded immediately as they scored in the 12th minute to take the score to 5-2 as the goal was scored by Alex Tanguay. However, the Calgary Flames sealed the match when they scored in the 18th minute through Rene
Bourque who completed his hat-trick. The Calgary Flames finished with the score 6-2.
"It shouldn't happen," Captain of Columbus Blue Jackets Rick Nash said.
"We are at home in front of our home fans. We are just disappointed in the effort we put in tonight."
