2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – Carolina Hurricanes thrash New York Islanders 7-2
The 166th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series saw the New York Islanders play the Carolina Hurricanes. The match took place at the home of the Carolina Hurricanes at the RBC Centre this Tuesday. This was the 12th game of
the regular season for the New York Islanders as well as the Carolina Hurricanes. 13,000 fans came in support of their respective teams as they cheered them in hope for a victory. The home team put a dominating performance in all of the 3 periods and won the
match with an impressive score of 7-2.
1st Period
Though the away team, New York Islanders started off the period strongly as they fired shots from everywhere on the pitch they couldn’t score. The passing, midfield and the defence were all perfect but there was lack in the department of offence.
However, as the period progressed, the home team grew in confidence displaying excellent skills. Their passing and shooting became very effective as a result they scored in the 11th minute to take the lead. The goal was scored by Joe Corvo from
a powerful strike from 44 feet that went flying into the back of the net.
After taking the lead, the home team pressed on to double their lead and were successful in doing so in the 16th minute. The goal was scored through a splendid shot by Jon Matsumoto through a simple tip in from 7 feet. The home team sent the home
crowd and completed a dominating performance in the period by scoring once again in the 19th minute. The goal was scored by Captain Eric Staal from a powerful shot from 38 feet.
The period ended with the Carolina Hurricanes in the lead at 3-0. During the course of the period, the New York Islanders made 9 goal attempts without any goal attempts and Carolina Hurricanes made 15 goal attempts scoring 3 goals.
2nd Period
The Carolina Hurricanes started off the 2nd period strongly once again and fired shots at the opposing goal regularly. They displayed some excellent passing and shooting abilities and further strengthened their lead by scoring in the 10th
minute. The goal was scored by Brandon Sutter from simple tip in shot from close range.
Despite the fact that the score was 4-0 in favour of the Carolina Hurricanes, they were determined to score more goals. The dominated performance was seen once again as they scored in the 11th minute to take the score to 5-0. The goal was scored
by Tiri Tulsty from 12 feet through a superb flick shot.
During the course of the rest of the period, both teams had several easy scoring opportunities but they were unable to grab any one of them. The New York Islanders were determined but much to their disappointment they couldn’t score. The period ended with
the home team, Carolina Hurricanes leading 5-0.
During the course of the period, the Carolina Hurricanes made 10 goal attempts and scored twice while the New York Islanders made 12 goal attempts without any goals.
3rd Period
The 3rd period saw the hard work of the New York Islanders finally being rewarded in the 3rd minute when they scored their 1st goal of the match. The goal was scored by Michael Grabner from 12 feet through a perfectly placed
power shot.
But it was the Carolina Hurricanes who stole the show as they scored their 6th goal of the match. The goal was scored by rookie Jeff Skinner from 8 feet through a flick shot during power play in the 11th minute. The score at the time
was 6-1 at the time.
The New York Islanders managed to respond this time with a goal of their own to take the score to 6-2. The goal was scored by Pa Parenteau through a good shot from 13 feet.
But as before, the Carolina Hurricanes put up quite a show and scored the final goal of the game to seal the dominating win with the score on 7-2. The goal was scored by Jon Matsumoto from 40 feet through a powerful strike. The period ended as the Carolina
Hurricanes won the match 7-2.
During the period both teams scored 2 goals each with the Carolina Hurricanes making 7 goal attempts and the New York Islanders making 12 goal attempts.
At the end of the match Coach of the Hurricanes Paul Maurice said, "I didn't want to go through that first period without scoring," Maurice said.
"It was good because then you don't have to talk about (the scoreless streak) any more."
"It was pretty much the same kind of effort we've been getting," Maurice said. "There wasn't anything out of the ordinary. (But) then we got on a roll, got a good feeling and started to do a lot of good things right for a while. Then coaches
have fun after that."
