2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – Carolina Hurricanes win 5-2 against San Jose Sharks despite being away
The Carolina Hurricanes were up against the San Jose Sharks this Tuesday at the HP Pavilion Arena, home of the San Jose Sharks. This was the 77th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series
as the two teams started off the proceedings at 7:37 local time. There were around 18,000 fans that came to support their respective teams, as the Carolina Hurricanes played the 5th game and the San Jose Sharks played the 4th
game of the campaign thus far. The away team dominated the 1st and the last period and won the match 5-2.
1st Period
The Carolina Hurricanes are one of the teams that possess attacking mentality. With the skill and players that they have, the Carolina Hurricanes possess the ability to overpower any team on their day.
Tuesday, 19th October was certainly their day, as they displayed brilliant skills that resulted in domination of the 1st period. The Carolina Hurricanes passing was pin point and they kept the possession for a good amount of time. The
defence of the away team was also commendable. The defence worked well with the goal keeper to restrict the opposition to very less goal attempts during the course of period.
The Carolina Hurricanes dictated the game from the very start and scored in the 6th minute to take the lead. The goal came from an Eric Staal shot, Captain of the Carolina Hurricanes from a distance of 20 feet. Despite taking the lead, the Carolina
Hurricanes continued to press on the opposing defence. This paid off as they scored once again in the 18th minute to establish the 2 goals lead. The goal was scored by Erik Cole who scored from 26 feet through splendid quick-worked flick shot. The
period ended as the Carolina Hurricanes was in the lead with the score 2-0.
During the course of the period, the Carolina Hurricanes scored twice out of the 10 goal attempts they made and the San Jose Sharks made 9 goal attempts but they couldn’t find a goal.
2nd Period
The home team, San Jose Sharks started the 2nd period impressing many but they couldn’t capitalize from the start they got and didn’t score. Scoring early on was the important thing which the Carolina Hurricanes was successful in doing.
The Carolina Hurricanes scored as a result of some careless mistake while on the offence by the San Jose Sharks. The goal took the score to 3-0 for the away team with the goal coming from Patrick Dawyer in the 5th minute.
However, momentum shifted after this as the San Jose Sharks scored in the 7th minute to cut down the lead. The goal was scored by Patrick Marleau through a tip in shot. The home team got confidence from this and with the frequent attacks; they
scored once again in the 10th minute through Patrick Marleau once again to pull the score back to 3-2. The period ended with the score on 3-2 with the San Jose Sharks hoping to make a comeback.
3rd Period
However, the San Jose Sharks was high in terms of confidence at the start of the 3rd period but it was the Carolina Hurricanes who scored to regain the 3 goals lead.
The goal was scored by Chad Larose who hit a spectacular tip in from close range. The attacking game of the Carolina Hurricanes prevented them from staying at the back. They knew they were strong on the attacking so they pressed on. They were rewarded for
this in the 8th minute when they scored through Joni Pitkanen from a snap off shot from 49 feet.
The period ended with no further goal as the Carolina Hurricanes won the match 5-2. At the end of the match, the Head Coach of the Carolina Hurricanes Paul Maurice said, "The things we wanted to do we didn't do in Vancouver and we didn't have success.
We directly did a lot of them tonight and it's good early in the season to have a night where you get five," Coach Paul Maurice said.
"It just gets more people feeling good about themselves and feeling like they're having a good start to their season, which is really important."
