2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – Chicago Blackhawks win 2-1 against the Vancouver Canucks in shootout
The defending champions, Chicago Blackhawks were up against the Vancouver Canucks in the 80th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series. The game took place at the United Centre, home of the Chicago Blackhawks this past
Wednesday. The game saw the Chicago Blackhawks playing in their 8th game and the Vancouver Canucks play their 7th game of the NHL Premiere Series. The match was not productive in terms of goals but the Chicago Blackhawks eventually won
the match 2-1.
1st Period
The period began on a high for the Vancouver Canucks as they dominated the early part of the period. They came up with splendid pieces of play that ended when a player in an open position hit a shot wide. The main story of the period was that the Vancouver
Canucks came up with chances but wasted them. They were all potentially goal scoring chances but couldn’t that lacked the final touch.
Vancouver Canucks constant attacks and failure to score gave the Chicago Blackhawks confidence and they converted this into good pieces of play. The home team was backed by the fans and with the confidence that they had they scored in the last minute of
the period to take the lead. The goal was scored by Viktor Stalberg who scored from 22 feet through a perfect flick shot that was perfectly placed.
The period ended with both teams coming up with numerous chances but there was only one goal in the period in favour of the Chicago Blackhawks. During the course of the period, the Chicago Blackhawks made 12 goal attempts and Vancouver Canucks made 9 goal
attempts as both went into the break as the home team was cheered off by the fans.
2nd Period
The 2nd period saw both teams take on the game attackingly. The mentality that both teams adopted, Chicago Blackhawks once again got more chances than the away team.
Both teams didn’t convert the chances, due to the bad finishing of the teams. Both teams had the supplies from the middle part but front line lacked the scoring ability. However, this doesn’t mean that the defence of both teams was weak. This was due to
the level of quality in the midfield of both teams that often provided players open chances after a pin point pass found them in a goal scoring position.
However, both of the team couldn’t score any goal and the period ended goalless with the score still 1-0 in favour of the Chicago Blackhawks. During the period, Chicago Blackhawks made 12 goal attempts and the Vancouver Canucks made 10 goal attempts.
3rd Period
The 3rd period saw the Vancouver Canucks score in the very first minute to level things. The goal was scored by Daniel Sedin who scored from close range through a perfect power shot. The Vancouver Canucks kept on attacking on the opposing goal
but they couldn’t score any further goals.
The Vancouver Canucks also maintained a good and tight defence that played a major role in restricting the Chicago Blackhawks to goal attempts from long range.
The period ended with the Chicago Blackhawks making 6 goal attempts with no goals and the Vancouver Canucks scored 1 goal after making 10 goal attempts. With the scores level, the Vancouver Canucks dominated the play, attacked and broke past the defence
every now and then making 8 goal attempts compared to 2 goal attempts of the Chicago Blackhawks.
The overtime ended goalless and the match went into shootout as the Chicago Blackhawks won the match through Patrick Kane’s goal.
"That's a great sight to see, but more than anything it was just a solid game all the way around against a hungry, aggressive team that had a lot to play for tonight,"
said Turco, who improved on the 2.74 goals-against average he brought into the game by making 36 saves – including eight in OT.
"It was good one and we're kind of streaking."
"It was just one of those defensive games," said Hossa, who finished with three shots. "It was up and down and lots of pucks in the neutral zone, but not as many clean chances. At the end, obviously I had two breakaways and didn't score, but
otherwise I think both teams played pretty good defensively."
