2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – Colorado Avalanche win 3-1 against the New York Rangers after scoring twice in the last period
The 70th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series took place at the Madison Square Garden, home of the New York Rangers. This was witnessed by around 18,000 fans who came to support their respective teams this past Monday on the 18th
of October 2010. The match saw the Colorado Avalanche play the 6th game of the Premiere Series and was the 4th game for the New York Rangers thus far. With the home advantage, it was predicted that the New York Rangers would easy their
way past the Colorado Avalanche but the away team stunned them with 2 goals in the final period to win the match 3-1.
1st Period
The New York Rangers was quick out of the blocks mainly due to the home advantage and came up with some decent goal attempts. The plays that developed were also true pieces of class but the finishing or final touch as you can say didn’t exist in their play.
This was the flaw in their game during the opening few moments.
However, the New York Rangers were desperate to score and they pushed all of their men forward. This left open spaces at the back and when they were caught on a counter-attack in the 13th minute, they were punished. The goal that came in favour
of the New York Rangers saw the goal scorer Chris Stewart score from 11 feet through a tip in. The goal earned him his 4th goal of the campaign thus far.
The home team, New York Rangers tried hard to score and level things before they went into the break but they just couldn’t get past the defence of the Avalanche that was more of a brick wall. However, working constantly hard and the determination resulted
in the Colorado Avalanche scoring in the 19th minute to level the score. The goal was scored by Alex Frolov from 15 feet through a wrist off shot.
The first 20 minutes of the game saw the Colorado Avalanche come up with 17 goal attempts and the New Rangers came up with 12 goal attempts. Out of the 29 goal attempts two goals were scored, one for each team.
2nd Period
With the start in the 2nd period, the home team was able to gain some confidence and fire a few shots early on and also displayed some excellent skills on ice.
As both teams settled, the game turned into a defence dominated period. There were no lack of attacks and the offence was also strong but the defence of both teams didn’t let players enter the close range area and if they did, they made sure they didn’t
get the possession.
The period saw no goal during it with the score still 1-1 at the end of the 2nd period. During the course of the period, the Colorado Avalanche made 8 goal attempts and the New York Rangers made 10 goal attempts out of which none found the back
of the net.
3rd Period
With the start of the 3rd period, the Colorado Avalanche came out stronger of the two teams and was looking to score.
During the last 20 minutes, the Colorado Avalanche scored 2 goals. Out of the two goals, the first came in the 8th minute that was scored by Chris Stewart who fired a brilliant shot from 13 feet through a wrist off shot.
The 2nd goal came in the 8th minute too and the goal was scored by Daniel Winnik who scored from 7 feet through a wrist off shot. The period and the game ended as the Colorado Avalanche won the match 3-1.
"I think it's a little healthy competition," said the younger Stewart, who had 28 goals last season while his brother has broken onto the scene this season after scoring 4 goals in his first 105 career games.
"It's great to see him coming into his own in this League. If he does outscore me, I'll be more than happy for him. It's good to push each other and it's great competition."
"I've just been playing with Stas, and any time you give a player like Stastny time and space on the goal line and me out front, he puts it right on my stick," Stewart said. "It's kind of hard not to score from there."
