2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – Columbus Blue Jackets win 3-0 against the Atlanta Thrashers

Thursday, 4th November 2010 saw the Atlanta Thrashers play host to the Atlanta Thrashers. The match took place at the Philips Arena in front of 8,500 fans as the home team was up against the Columbus Blue Jackets. This was the 174th
game of the NHL Premiere Series and saw the Atlanta Thrashers play their 13th game, whereas the Columbus Blue Jackets played their 12th game of the campaign thus far. The game was a tough battle that saw the away team edge ahead, as they
scored 3 goals to register the victory 3-0.
1st Period
The home team made a good start to the match as they fired a few shots at the opposing goal coming close to scoring in the opening 5 minutes only to be denied by the goal keeper. The Atlanta Thrashers tried desperately to score but they couldn’t.
On the other hand, the home team started to make attacks and made some excellent pieces of play. Their passing got better and better and at the end of the plays, the shooting was brilliant. The only problem was the fact that they couldn’t score like their
counterparts. After the 12th minute both teams started to make attacks with little concentration on defence. The attention both teams gave to the defence resulted in the period being goalless. Thrashers and the Blue Jackets had the share of the
scoring chances as they were in open and clear scoring position but they didn’t score.
The period ended with the score deadlocked at 0-0. During the course of the period, the Atlanta Thrashers made 8 goal attempts and the Columbus Blue Jackets made 11 goal attempts but out of the 19 goal attempts, none was converted into a goal.
2nd Period
The Columbus Blue Jackets was the one that dictated the proceedings at the start of the 2nd period. They waited from open spaces and when they came across, they neared the goal with quick and pin point passing that left the defence shocked.
However, the problem was again that they couldn’t score. But due to the hard work and constant at shots, they managed to score in the 5th minute to take the lead. The goal was a result of a spectacular shot from 16 feet through a powerful strike
with the goal scorer being Derick Brassard.
The Atlanta Thrashers gave it all they had, pushing all of the men forward in their attacks. They started to take their game to the next level as the period approached its end. Putting the foot on the gas, they bombarded the opposing goal with shots flying
from every corner of the pitch. This gave the away team some uncomfortable moments and unsettled them, but they managed to combine well and keep the score 1-0. The period ended with the Columbus Blue Jackets leading 1-0.
During the course of the period, the Atlanta Thrashers made 9 goal attempts without any goals whereas the Columbus Blue Jackets scored once out of the 11 goal attempts they made.
3rd Period
The Columbus Blue Jackets made a good start to the final period. They were determined to score and double the lead so that they could seal the win. This was not the case as the match remained very tight. Both teams had a share of the chances but the Blue
Jackets was the team with more chances.
However, the Columbus Blue Jackets scored in the 11th minute to take the score to 2-0. The goal was scored by Jakub Voracek from a simple tip in shot 61 feet away from goal. The away team continued to attack and sealed the win when they scored
in the 19th minute. The goal was scored by RJ Umberger from a flick shot.
The period and the match ended with the Columbus Blue Jackets winning the match 3-0. During the final period, the home team made 8 goal attempts whereas the Blue Jackets made 17 goal attempts scoring twice.
"It's been like that for probably the last five, six games," said the 23-year-old Brassard, the former No. 6 overall pick who has 5 goals and 3 assists this season.
"We didn't start the season together. But now it's going really well. For me, as a center, to have two wingers like that - a big power forward who can do pretty much all around on the ice and a forechecker, a great play-maker who's really strong - my game's
just going way better because they're really good all around on the ice."
