2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – Dallas Stars hold the New Jersey Devils to 4-3 win
The 7th game in the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series took place at the Prudential Centre, home of the New Jersey Devils. The match saw the New Jersey Devils up against the Dallas Stars in front 18,000 fans. The match took place this Friday as
both teams were playing in their 1st match of the regular season.
1st Period
The Dallas Stars were quick to get out of the blocks. Their extravagant passing helped them make early goal attempts. Almost scoring in the 1st minute, the Dallas Stars saw the opposing goalkeeper stopping the shot.
However, with the crowd backing the New Jersey Devils, the home team scored in the 3rd minute of the 1st period. The goal was a result of a splendid 7 feet shot blasted into the net by Travis Zajac. Gaining the lead, the New Jersey
Devils were looking to contain but failed in doing so, and the Dallas Stars were seen firing shots at the Devils goal.
The New Jersey Nets changed their strategy, and approached the game attackingly. This gave them open position and they scored in the 8th minute to establish a 2-goal lead. The goal came from Zach Parise. The game turned into an offensive battle
as both teams successfully took on the defences. With the momentum and score in their favour, the New Jersey Devils were more confident of the two while attacking.
The Dallas Stars also showed their strength and scored in the 12th minute through a spectacular play that saw Captain Brenden Morrow scoring from 12 feet. The goal came as a result of him and Mark Fistric combining together to get past the tight
New Jersey Devils defence.
The period ended with the score 2-1 in favour of the New Jersey Devils. During the course of the period, the New Jersey Devils scored twice out of the 11 goal attempts, whereas the Dallas Stars scored once out of the 11 goals attempts.
2nd Period
After a brief team talk, the Dallas Stars came out looking determined to score. They proved to be the more determined to score, when they fired 7 shots within the opening 2 minutes of the period.
The New Jersey Devils didn’t look comfortable with how things were going. Taking advantage of this, the Dallas Stars scored in the 4th minute to level the score. The goal was scored by Loui Eriksson through brilliant wrist work from 7 feet. With
the score all levelled, both wanted to take the lead.
The game shifted momentum once again and the New Jersey Devils this time were at the top of the proceedings. Dominating play in the department of passing to shooting, they scored to take the lead once again in the 11th minute. The goal scorer
this time was Jason Arnott who scored from 53 feet.
The Dallas Stars were aware that if they wanted to win they had to score as early as possible trailing 2-3. They were successful in doing so and scored in the very next minute through Brad Richards that levelled things at 3-3.
The rest of the period didn’t see much happening as both teams went into the break all tied up 3-3. The Dallas Stars came up with 12 goal attempts out of which they scored twice. The New Jersey Devils scored once out of the 5 goal attempts.
3rd Period
The 3rd period didn’t see much happening as the period ended with the teams still tied up at 3-3.
Much of the proceedings in the period were dominated by the New Jersey Devils who made 13 goal attempts. Displaying quality along with excellent pieces of play, they regularly got past the Dallas Stars defence. The Dallas Stars, on the other hand, were able
to fire 4 unsuccessful shots at the New Jersey Nets goal.
With the score tied, the game went into overtime during which the Dallas Stars scored and emerged as victorious 4-3. The goal was scored by Loui Eriksson in the 2nd minute who also bagged his 2nd for the match.
"I was thinking pass when I got to the red line, but the D-man took Richie away pretty good … it was a pretty nice shot," Eriksson said. "It's a nice win."
"I thought we competed really hard," MacLean said. "The work ethic was there. We had some chances. All the little mistakes we made are all correctable. We've just got to keep plugging."
