2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – Edmonton Oilers win 4-3 against the Montreal Canadiens

The first game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series 2010 on Wednesday saw the Edmonton Oilers go up against the Montreal Canadiens. The match was played at the Centre Bell Arena, home of the Montreal Canadiens, and in front of 21,000 fans. This was the 358th game of the NHL regular season with the Montreal Canadiens playing their 25th game while the Edmonton Oilers played their 24th game of the campaign.
The Montreal Canadiens and the Edmonton Oilers both made a decent start to the match as they displayed some excellent passing with some venomous shooting at the end of the plays. The passing was brilliant and the offence was very powerful which saw them getting past the opposing defence regularly.
The home team struck first blood, scoring in the 14th minute to take the lead. The goal that broke the deadlock was scored by Scott Gomez through a brilliant flick shot. The away side also had their share of scoring chances but they couldn’t score.
However, the Edmonton Oilers scored in the 18th minute to level the scores. The goal was scored by Kurtis Foster through a powerful strike that left the goal keeper with no chance of stopping it.
The period ended with the scores level at 1-1 with the Edmonton Oilers making 9 goal attempts while the Montreal Canadiens made 15 goal attempts.
The 2nd period saw the Edmonton Oilers making a strong start firing shots every now and then but they went wide or found the goal keeper in the way. However, the home team managed to take the lead once again with a goal in the 9th minute. The goal was scored by Mathieu Darche from a decent long range shot.
The away side tried to score a goal as well and in doing so pushed all the men forward. This didn’t work for them and they were caught on a counterattack in the 11th minute.
The Montreal Canadiens capitalize fully from the counterattack scoring to establish a 2 goals lead to their advantage. The goal was scored by Roman Hamrlik from a perfectly placed flick shot.
The Edmonton Oilers made more than a dozen goal attempts but couldn’t score. The period ended with the Montreal Canadiens leading 3-1. During the period the Canadiens made 11 goal attempts while the Oilers made 11 goal attempts.
The final period saw the Edmonton Oilers come out determined to score. They were rewarded for the hard work they put in with a goal in the 11th minute. The goal was scored by Ales Hemsky from a decent strike.
The Oilers continued to press on in search of the equalizing goal which they scored in the 14th minute. The goal was scored by Sam Gagner.
The period ended with no further goals and the scores level on 3-3. As a result, the match went in overtime during which the Edmonton Oilers scored through Dustin Penner in the 3rd minute to win the match 4-3.
