2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series Latest – Montreal Canadiens win 2-1 against the New York Rangers to break the winning streak of the Rangers
The 635th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series saw the New York Rangers host the Montreal Canadiens hoping to extend their winning streak to four games. The match was played on Tuesday at Madison Square Garden with around 18,000 fans
coming to witness the match. New York Rangers went stronger into the match with the winning streak. However, Montreal Canadiens gave them a tough time and won the match 2-1. Benoit Pouliot was named the star selection of the match for the all important goal
he scored.
New York Rangers made a great start to the match and the crowd supporting them, the home side was able to come up with early chances. The New York Rangers worked hard and with the brilliant pieces of play they developed, the Rangers took the lead in the
5th minute.
The goal scored by Brandon Dubinsky was the only goal of the period despite the numerous goal attempts made by both teams. Montreal Canadiens also had several goal scoring opportunities but they failed to convert them into goals as the period ended with
New York Rangers leading 1-0. During the period, Rangers made 9 goal attempts while Montreal Canadiens made 14 goal attempts.
The second period was a hard fought battle right from the time when the period started. There were some excellent pieces of play and brilliant passing was on display by both teams. The offence was also strong and regular shots on goal were fired by sides.
However, it looked as if the period would end goal less but Montreal scored through Jaroslav Spacek in the final minute of the period to level the scores. The period ended with the scores level on 1-1 with both teams making 11 goal attempts each during the
20 minutes of play.
With the scores level the final period was expected to be a tight and hard fought battle. It wasn’t the case as the Montreal Canadiens dominated much of the period.
There passing was inch perfect and with the strong offence the away side took the lead scoring in the 7th minute through a brilliant Benoit Pouliot flick shot. Montreal Canadiens continued to pile pressure on the home side in their hunt for more
goals but unfortunately they couldn’t score.
Both teams started to get offensively stronger as the match neared its end combining excellently with each other to get past the opposing defence. New York Rangers came up with a few shots with the match ended but weren’t successful in scoring.
During the course of the final period, New York Rangers made 6 goal attempts while Montreal Canadiens made 13 goal attempts and won the match 2-1. The selection of the match at the end said:
"I have no clue. I had my face on the ice and I didn't see a thing," Pouliot said. "I think it a few things. Darche says he touched it. I say I touched it with my hand so I don't know what's going on right now. It doesn't matter. A goal's a goal, and it's
always fun to be on the ice when that happens."
