2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – New Jersey Devils win 2-1 against the Calgary Flames after shootout

The 313th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series was played between the Calgary Flames and the New Jersey Devils. The match was played at the Prudential Centre this Wednesday in front of 13,000 fans as the home team, New Jersey Devils
were hoping for a win. The match saw the Calgary Flames play their 21st game of the season while the New Jersey Devils played the 22nd game of the campaign thus far.
The start to the 1st period was slow by both the teams. Neither of the two teams went on attacks and just stood their ground waiting for opportunities to come their way. The only problem was the fact that both the teams had adopted the same strategy.
However, half way through the first period the home team started to push forward in search of a goal. They started to find open spaces that resulted in a goal for them. Thus the home team was able to break the deadlock and take the lead in the 14th
minute of the period.
The goal was scored by David Clarkson through a venomous shot. The period saw the New Jersey Devils finish on a high with a few more chances but no goals. The period ended with the home side leading 1-0. During the first period, the Devils had 6 goal attempts
while the Calgary Flames made 7 goal attempts.
The 2nd period of the match saw the home team continue with the attacks for sometime but then it was the away side that took the initiative to attack.
The Calgary Flames came across scoring chances regularly but they were unable to convert them into goals. The story was pretty much the same for the New Jersey Devils though, but they lagged behind the Flames in terms of goal attempts.
The period didn’t see any goals and ended with the Devils still leading 1-0 with the Flames making 11 goal attempts and the Devils making 6 goal attempts in the period.
The final period of the match saw the Flames carry some more confidence and their determination saw them scoring in the 2nd minute of the period to level the scores. The goal was scored by Rene Bourque from a simple tip in shot.
This was the only goal of the match and the only big attack of the period. The period ended with the scores level on 1-1 as both the teams made just 6 goal attempts each.
The match went into overtime where no goals were scored as expected, keeping in mind the defensive mentality both the teams adopted during the course of the 60 minutes of regular play. Overtime also ended, but it was the Devils who won the match in the shootout.
Ilya Kovalchuk’s goal in the shootout proved to be the difference between the two teams.
