2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – New York Islanders win 6-4 against New York Rangers
The New York Rangers took on the New York Islanders in the second game between the two teams at the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series on Monday. The Nassau Coliseum was filled with 11, 784 spectators as part of the 28th game of the NHL regular
season. It surely was a very exciting match as the New York Islanders only won the match in the last period with a close margin of 6-4.
1st Period
The home team started the match on a high and fired shots at the Rangers goal earlier on with little success. The New York Islanders also attacked the Rangers goal but it was a wide shot or a good save by the goalkeeper that resulted in the teams not scoring.
However, after constantly trying and putting in all the hard work, the New York Islanders scored in the 13th minute to take the lead. The goal was scored by Blake Comeau through a snap off from 10 feet.
The New York Rangers came up with small attacks of their own that resulted in playing in open positions quite frequently. The New York Rangers also scored as a result in the 14th minute through Brandon Dubinsky. This levelled the score at 1-1
and the game turned into a tough competition with the scores tied up.
The New York Islanders were more dominating out of the two in the department of offence as well defence. They dominated play from the start of the period to end with one mistake that cost them the goal. Josh Bailey was the goal scorer who scored in the 17th
minute to put the New York Islanders in the lead.
Statistics showed that during the period, the New York Rangers scored once out of 12 goal attempts and the New York Islanders scored twice out of the 9 goal attempts.
2nd Period
The second period started on a high for the New York Rangers with the occasional shots on target. The most notable thing during the period was that the New York Islanders maintained a good tight defensive line at the back as well.
The back line was non-porous and stopped attacks regularly. With the hard work in defence and their smooth transition from offence to defence, the New York Rangers scored in the 9th minute through Michael Del Zotto through a 60 feet slap off.
This goal gave the New York Rangers the lead with the score on 2-1.
They scored once again in the 14th minute through Dan Girarad from a distance of 56 feet. Leading the game 3-1, the New York Islanders hoped to score in a bid to cut down the lead. The New York Islanders scored to cut down the lead in the last
minute of the second period through Matt Moulson. The period ended with the score on 3-3.
During this period, the New York Rangers scored twice out of 13 times and the New York Islanders scored once out of the 11 goal attempts.
3rd Period
The New York Rangers managed to come up with excellent plays at the start of the 3rd period coming up with regular plays that often saw their players in open positions.
The New York Rangers scored in the 13th minute to take the score to 4-3. The goal was scored by Artem Anisimov from 40 feet.
The New York Islanders scored in the 16th minute to level the score through Parenteau from wrist off from 12 feet. After levelling the scores, the New York Islanders scored in the 17th minute once again to tie the game through Blake
Comeau’s 11 feet snap off.
With the score on 5-4 in favour of the New York Islanders, they scored once again in the 19th minute to seal the win 6-4 with the last goal coming from Frans Nielsen.
"I think for our team, getting three points out of four at home is important," Coach Scott Gordon said. "We have 12 of our next 14 on the road, so the fact that we were able to come away with these points -- and for us to be able to do it in the manner that
we did it -- obviously, we're thrilled."
“It’s something we have to learn from,” Tortorella said. “I saw a lot of good things from within the club in this game, but we come away empty. I’m not unhappy with the club. There are some good things there.”
